Title: Smoked Sloppy Joes on a Fast Eddy PG-500
Post by: pmillen on March 15, 2015, 07:51:42 PM
It took me almost four hours to cook this but it would have been faster if I could have dialed in my pit settings faster.  I wanted to brown the meat in a frying pan and make a lot of smoke at 200°.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For PG owners
My original PG-500 setting was 15/45 but I changed it to 10/45 for more smoke.

After an hour I raised the temperature to 350° but a half hour later I could see that the temperature was climbing too slowly so I raised the HHt to 75.  That was fine for the rest of the cook.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The delays weren’t troublesome because I'm not serving it today.

Also–I forgot the warning about cooking tomato-based dishes in cast iron.  Fortunately it didn’t seem to taint this dish.

Ingredients
2 Pounds ground beef
½ Medium onion, diced
1 Large green bell pepper, diced
4 Garlic cloves, minced
1½ Cup ketchup
3 oz. tomato paste (½ 6-oz. can)
1½ Cup water
2 Tablespoons brown sugar
2 Teaspoons chili powder
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions
Brown the ground beef.  It had formed a bit of a smoke ring on top of the pan.  I should have taken the photo before stirring it.

Add diced onion, green pepper and garlic.  Cook until onion is translucent.

Add ketchup, tomato paste, water and the other stuff.  Stir it all together and simmer for at least a half hour.

Simmering.

The test taste was really good.  It's in the refrigerator and will be served tomorrow.

That looks and sounds wonderful Paul! I could eat way more than I should of those tasty Joes!
Oh don't worry about the tomatoes in the ci, as long as you have a good seasoned pan!

Ummmm.  Well, I was really excited to see the Norton.  Then it was time to ride.  Then we were really thirsty.  Then we ate.  Then we talked, and talked, and...  Then we were thirsty again and about then I realized that I should have taken photographs of the food.

I'm going to post this and then see what I can do about my thirst.

Oh my goodness- what a beautiful bike! I have been looking for an old Triumph (that I could afford) but if I found this, I would hock my - well whatever it took. Very nice!

Café racers are really old school.  The guys that built them are aging out of motorcycling.  And you can buy higher performance at a lower price.  A true Norton featherbed frame (see the downtube, bottom and upward loop?) goes for about $5K.

I think that some of todays crotch rockets could be categorized as production café racers.  I was in a shop a couple of days ago and saw a Moto Guzzi that looked like what I would build if I had a Guzzi.  It is their V7 Racer.

I have to say - I am less interested in more performance vs. old school style. I am a curmudgeon. I love the old Norton's and Triumph's. Those are classics. Just me...  ;D ;D
