For my GMG modified smoker .
http://www.letstalkbbq.com/index.php?topic=15422.0
I build a smoke generator to increase the smoke as the box is a larger box .

Tomorrow it will be my first trial of the new smoker.

Looking forward to your trial run!

Me too

Ahron - you are amazing achi! 8) I am looking forward to see it work as well. And - I hope you can try it with chips and pellets as well - to see what fuels work best in it.

Looks like a cool tool for adding lotsa smoke.
That tube is attached to a blower of some kind?
It looks like you have some hot chips in the bottom and the air is drawn in thru the small vent, keeping the fire going as it goes thru the chips.
That could work in my Masterbuilt smoker for hot or cold smoking. Very nice.

I hope Ahron will show us some detail - but I think this is a passive convection device. So, the cooler, more dense/oxygen rich air is drawn in the bottom hole, the oxygen feeds the fire - and the expanding residual gases/smoke rise and are exhausted thru the upper hole connected to the tube in the picture.
Once a gizmo like this is well tuned with correct intake/output it should run fine without a fan.
The key is to find what the right diameter of intake is, how to place the fire/fuel pile - and to have just the right restriction. So that you keep the full smoldering without either flaming up and burning too fast and conversely, not too little airflow such that the fire goes out completely.

What is the attached tube for?

What is the attached tube for?
Mounting it thru a hole in the side wall of the cooker - I think Ahron's modified Green Mountain "cabinet" that he built has insulated double walled construction, so the length of the tube gets the smoke into the cabinet.

I think Jack is referring to the longer, thinner tube - not the tube the smoke is exiting through. I assumed it was to provide some sort of airflow (like the Smoke Daddy) as well. Looking forward to Ahron's details and experiences.

Right...sorry- I think that is for attaching a small aquarium air pump to make sure your smoke/spent gasses are exiting the burn chamber so more fresh air can be drawn in at the bottom the chamber - insuring that the embers continue to smolder. Great insurance against the fire going out.

all eyes here - looking forward to seeing results

I am not so good with explanation but let me try to explain .this smoke generator works on a Venturi idea. like most the smoke generators (Smoke Daddy and more )
it uses a pump to push air through a small pipe that is inserted in a thick pipe half way . the thick got an opening for the smoke to travel through .
this pipe is inserted in closed container (i use a stainless steel pipe it looks good )
the bottom cover got holes for air and the main body got a 12mm ( 0.5 in )hole that i used to start the fire . i use for my test wood pellets .
the pellets are put in the container and cover with the top cover .
i hope it is clear . if not i will do a video .

Makes a lot of sense - great explanation and pics. One of the things that Smoke Daddy found with their cold smoker is that they weren't getting enough air flow through coals/wood to keep it going. So they added a metal coil that drops into the unit to create an "air tunnel". Something to consider if you start having the same issue.
Nice looking add on!
-
Very clear explanation...
I figured you must have a small pump of some sort to keep the air moving.
Nice work.
When will they be exported to middle GA?
Just askin'...
-
good explanation ! Nice job on the unit too....

Once he gets the Minnesota warehouse set up, we'll get a unit down to you, Jack... ;) :D
Ahron - great explanation and super pictures tell the story. Very nice workmanship!
-
Thanks you all for the compliments .
i tested it today in my modified GMG ,
i used a handful of GMG pellets and it generate 3 hours of smoke . so i reckon it can do smoke for 12 hours .
i will post over the weekend all the test that i did

Great idea and really nice fabrication skills.

Maybe we can get a package deal with the skewers ! ! !
Cool idea, Ahron, and great workmanship and explanation.
