Title: Gas Burner Advice
Post by: Groovedigger Dan on July 29, 2016, 10:06:04 AM
I'm looking to get one of those outdoor, propane gas burners (like a Bayou Classic) for beer brewing, shrimp boils, etc.  Anyone have any tips or brand preferences, pros/cons?

Thanks!

This is my favorite cooking appliance on my deck. I paid $149 at Costco several years ago. Academy Sports sells the CampChef Tahoe for $179. I don't boil or fry anything in the house unless the weather is really bad. The griddle cooks better steaks and burgers than any of my grills.

Wow, that is slick!  May be a little more than I'm looking for but now you've piqued my interest in it which means it's probably on my mental "Future Sh#t To Git" list  ;D

I assume that griddle is removable so one could put a big ol' stockpot up on the burners?

I got a one burner Camp Chef 30 Pro I believe. Works great, plenty of power! I later added a griddle and love it.

I have the same one and love it Dan. Besides the griddle I use a wok and CI skillets, steam corn on it and like to do shrimp boils. Don

The Bayou Classic KAB6 with a 40 PSI regulator.  They also make a unit with two tubes for the burner. This works well too. Sort of a preference thing on which one.
This is not a low and slow unit. Its for boiling and frying.

This is important... 4 legs!   The units with 3 legs are and accident waiting to happen.

First , what are you planning on cooking?
If heating a 80-120 qt crawfish pot or turkey frying you need a high pressure unit, but it's not good for much else.
If you want to cook in smaller pots, put a griddle on it or fry fish in a 12 qt pot a low pressure (up to
30,000 BTU is more flexible.
I love the camp chef cast aluminum burners!
An explorer cook top  with 2 burners can be found for about $100.

Primarily plan on using it for brewing, 3-5 gals of water at a rolling boil for at least an hour.  But I'd also like to do some shrimp boils since I've got the big 'ol stockpot.

The KAB6 comes with a 30PSI reg.  You can get the 40 separately for when you want to boil shrimp crawfish potatoes and such. Speeds up the boil time significantly.
The 30 is easier on the gas wallet though.
