Title: Mixed Grill
Post by: smokeasaurus on August 11, 2019, 10:43:31 AM
Last month we were at Lowes here in town and somehow magically I ended up the grill department.

How does that keep happening  :D

They had a Pit Boss Pro Series Vertical smoker on clearance.  (very similar to Dwards new Copperhead)

If I use my Lowes credit card I get another 5% off.

somehow it ended up into the back of my Jeep.

I have a MAK 2 Star and believe it or not, the food is better off of the Pit Boss.

Yeah, I said it   ???

Easier to clean. Tons of capacity. 45 lb hopper ( I am still on my first 40 lb bag of pellets) Way easier to clean. Water pan (I always add cut onions to it )

Is it of the same quality of the MAK.  Oh heck no.  But I listen to my taste buds.

Anyhows, just wanted to post a pic of last nights cook.

Dusted some chicken wings. Added some turds. To top it off, stuffed portabella shrooms. (The water pan was not filled with water, just used it for drippings)
Only used two racks. This pit can cook for a crowd

Can't argue with the results   The wings were insane. The bacon from the turds did the Bacon Rain on the wangs

Thanks again at looking at what The Smoke is cooking  :)

Very interesting cook and analysis of the situation.  Years ago when I was a moderator on a pellet cooking forum (now sadly defunct) and much more active in the developing use of pellets as a medium, I often wondered why some manufacturer didn't make exactly this cooker.  It has just the right compromises to result in a bargain price for the capability.  I think you just used it very well.

I agree with ya Tom. They are excellent smokers and they deliver very moist juicy results.

I've been toying with adding a vertical pellet to my Gridiron.  I loved the vertical case design of my old Smokin-It Model 3 for jerky, wings, etc. ... even ribs.  Out of curiosity, did you get the 3 Series or 5 series?

Also, I assume no issues with the higher side temps to get the skin on the wings crispy?

I am not sure what number series it is.  It is the Pro Series sold exclusively at Lowes.

At 400 degrees the skin comes out perfect. Just use the top two grates and do not add any water to the pan
