I’ve seen this done by some members with Ribs and Pork Butt and wanted to give it a try because the end results always look mouthwatering.
Instead of using CYM I used molasses to coat the butt before applying the rub.

Pic of the butt before going at 8 this morning with an IT of 32

Four hours later with the IT sitting at 120ish and smoker steady at 220-230

RAD I use the molasses on my butts and it is great. Makes for a nice bark so don't foil em ;)
-
In a pinch when out of mustard I used maple pancake syrup and then later in the cook after discovering I didn't have any brown sugar I used it again and it came out good................

Most of the posts I’ve seen on this were yours and thanks for the tip on not foiling

I use regular molasses as my glue too. Has anybody every tried black strap molasses on pork? Or would that be too intense?
-
I also use molasses for my butts ;D. Great color and bark.

Coming on hour 8 and sitting at IT of 170.

ohhhhhh look at that bark!
-
Man am I liking how these turn out. Superb Bark!
I know squirt uses molasses some too, so maybe one of you guys can answer this: How much molasses would you say you use per shoulder?
I love the flavor of molasses, but have to be careful with it due to allergies (Sulfates & Glutamates). That's why I like brown sugar, it has enough molasses so I get the flavor but not enough that it triggers reactions as long as I don't overindulge.
Maybe I should try this with a little brown sugar syrup.

This is my first run with using it, so I might not be the best to answer your question. But I used about the same amount that I would have used if using CYM. Not a lot, just enough to get a good coat for the rub.

Hitting hour 9 and still low 170's, I guess we're in the stall. This is where the magic happens.
-
Nice looking butt.

At 10 hours and sitting hard at mid-170 IT. The stall can be a killer but worth every minute.
-
Wow, that is quite a stall but it will be worth the wait!!

I stalled just looking at that last pic!

It’s pushing now. Hitting 180 and counting. Resisting the foil for a hard bark
-
That is great looking pork so far and it will only get better.
Will check back.
-
Use molasses on butts as well.
-
Are you kidding me? This was one of the longest cooks for a butt I’ve had. But man oh man this this was a great cook. This will be the only way I do a butt from now on.

The taste was amazing

I absolutely have to give the molasses a shot on my next butt. Great looking! Nice job.

Nice bark!
Isn't that the truth? That's one of the reasons I try not to plan a long cook for dinner the night I am cooking it.
-
Beautiful bark!
IMHO the extra time for the bark to develop is so worth it!
-
you did that butt proud. nicely done. i started using molasses also since muebe and squirt turned me on to it. nice bark partner. :P
-
The butt got fully pulled and it was amazing. I just gave my daughter a freezer size bag full of love.
