22" OldSmokey grill/smoker (http://oldsmokey.com/index.html)
I just picked up a 22" OldSmokey charcoal grill/smoker
they happen to be made in Houston so I drove over and picked up a factory 2nd for a great price.
they cook like a 22" Weber kettle, but better
they have much more room with the same 22" diameter
the Weber has 6" of clearance under the lid and 8" of clearance to the grill surface
and 5" of clearance between the fire grate and the grill grate
the OldSmokey has 12" of lid clearance
and 8" of clearance between the fire grate and the grill
and the lid has almost vertical sides which gives you much more room under the hood (http://i50.tinypic.com/20ztyfl.gif)

Nice score Capt!
I'm with LA, get cooking with that puppy.

Found it. I want that old smokey base as a starter platform for my charcoal chimney. I believe that will work on my wood deck!
-
Interesting...can't wait to see your first cook!
-

Great price on the Old Smokey Captain. I used to have the long legs on mine but I was scrubbing away one day on the cooking grates and she tipped over on me. I put the original legs back on. I just set in a chair next to it with a brewskie..........was the Old Smokey thermo pre-installed or did you add that yourself? Also, with the Weber Charcoal Chimney baskets do you have room still for a foil pan to set between em to catch the drippins??
-
Nice Jack! Now get that sucker dirty and take some pictures.

Pappy - we were talking about charcoal chimney starters (http://www.letstalkbbq.com/index.php?topic=1505.0) and Rick/nepas posted his propane starter chimney
very kewl
I ordered one too
I'm going to add a ceramic/teracotta water pan from a flower pot for a base for it to sit in

Thank you capt. I was just looking at those yesterday. Do you really think you could start that thing on a table? Trying to protect my composite deck. I love the concept of the thing.

I like the design of that lid. Lots of room for cooking.

Here are some videos featuring the Old Smokey

something for all to know:
when you buy the Weber hinged grill to use on the 22" OldSmokey
the Weber hinged grill is 21½" in diameter
the stock grill from OldSmokey is 21"
the stock grill sits on the 3 top leg screws that come through the base cabinet
but the Weber's extra 1/2" in diameter keeps it from resting on the 3 screws
what I did to make the Weber grill stable on the cabinet base was to put 3- 3/16" pop rivets through from the outside, at about 1" below the lip. they work great for supporting the larger Weber grill
and don't interfere with the stock 21" grill from resting on the three screws
I just remembered I have a Craycort cast iron grill for the weber! Now I have to get an Old Smokey.

-
smoke has one too
he just put his Weber to the curb
and put the cast iron grill on his OldSmokey (http://i50.tinypic.com/20ztyfl.gif)
Yeah, yeah, I'm seein' it. Thank you!

Hey Captain, can't find my Pops rivet gun (still looking) but i got the Weber placed snuggly on it and the Grill Grates for the 22.5 Weber fit perfectly as well....this will make my Old Smokey a mean searin machine.....gotta get yourself a set buddy :) Well, back to recuperatin...... :'(

Oh that looks real good.
I gotta show my wife, she likes this

I'm looking at one of these as a gift for a friend, and was wondering about the finish & warranty.
Here's the info:
Finish: Aluminized Steel - this stuff is rust resistant.
Warranty: 2 Year Limited.

I line the very bottom with a pc of hD foil. I then pick out the charcoal grate and dump it and roll up the foil and I got a pretty clean Old Smokey. If you line the bottom with foil, the bottom pc of the smokey will last forvever and you can always order a new charcoal grate (they always warp) I just take it on the lawn and stand on it every once in a while. When your handles get all splintery, you can order those as well.

I tried out my Old Smokey today for the first time (after an initial burn with no food). I was quite pleased! I didn't attempt anything major...just several burgers and chicken breasts (and one hot dog for my 8 year old). I plan to try some other items soon. This forum was a lot of help and useful tips! Thanks for all the great posts.

Then - all the more reason we need to keep 'em happy, and keep 'em here! ;D
-
Jack, I went to Lowes today to check out the new CharBroil TRU-Infrared grills and saw they had the Old Smokey on clearance.
Old Smokey #22 - $59.79
Leg extensions - $6.88 a set
Weber 22.5 hinged grate $18.99
Weber Charcoal holders - $14.99
So the whole setup would be $100.65, not bad deal.
-
None of the Lowe's in Norcal have them. I would like to see one in person.
-
Those are really purdy Captain.

OH yeah baby. Now slice it !!!!

I got my Old Smokey in today, and got off early enough to assemble and do a burn in. The top and bottom pieces are seriously stuck together. Tried numerous devices to pry between the two rolled over seams, but it is a soft material. I sent them an email to see if they have any tricks. Wish I had a giant tub of boiling water available.

Can you heat the metal with a torch perhaps to get them to expand and seperate?
-
These are your basic thin bucket tin. That's where the company got it's start, making tin buckets. A high pressure steam cleaner would probably pop it loose, but I don't have access to one anymore.

Maybe some WD40. You know the saying... if something is stuck and shouldn't be, use WD40 and if it isn't stuck and should be duct tape it.

Finally got the critter apart using a chunk of 1/2" square steel stock as a leverage point between the 2 rolled edges. Burning in now. Got the propane starter gizmo and am very impressed. This is after 5 minutes.

Turned of and let burn for 9 minutes or so, filled up one weber tray and closed the lid. Following Cap Jack, I started with bottom 1/2 open and top vents closed. Held very nice at 300 for about an hour.
dropped to 225, opened bottom to full got back to 300. Now after 2 & 1/2 hours its cruising at 225 or so. I will try a beer can chicken this weekend, should I use both of the Weber charcoal baskets
to get the proper temp for chicken?
-
Thanks' Jack, I'll go with both and keep an eye on it. When doing ribs with both baskets can you hold temps at 275 or so long enough to finish without adding coal?
-
I used to run my kettle around 230 just using one basket with no more than 25 briquettes in it....I wonder if that set up would work in the Old Smokey as well......
-
Off we go! Trying a chicken stand I bought for a buck at a garage sale.

-
That is a sweet stand...could you toss some veggies or cut up taters in that and let em get basted by the hot chicken drippins??
-
Maybe a little dark for some, but I like it this way. Just the smell of this bird is fantastic! Overall this is one slick little cooker. Ultra light weight, easy to pack up as the two halves pack together.
I think the RV crowd would like this grill, as it would be easy to store in the overhead due to it's very light weight. The wife tore into this bird before it even cooled down. Very juicy. I used 2 small chunks of Hickory in one side and 2 chunks of Cherry on the other. My Chicken cooks on the Traeger have been good, but there is nothing like charcoal with a kiss of wood for a nice change of pace.
I probably went to heavy with the rub, I used Zach's Hickory. The places with more rub were the darkest. If smoke were my neighbor I'd jump the fence and get into his Kingsford stash!
And yes, the box that the chicken stand came in said "As Seen on TV".

Nothing wrong with that beauty!! There are a bunch of back yards around this great country of ours that has an Old Smokey settin on it :)
-
SS I have to concur with you about charcoal and chicken. There is something magical about that mix. I love the chicken that comes off my PBC ;)
I don't even have to ask if the skin is crispy :P
-
I think I look at those Old Smokey's every time I go in the store. Now I'll probably break down and get one.
