Title: New GMG Jim Bowie
Post by: Amazen1 on May 05, 2013, 08:25:00 PM
I've been using my Traeger Texas(Clone) w/Ortech Controller, with good success for the past 2 years.  I got a "Smokin Deal" on a new GMG Jim Bowie, so taking the Old Clone up to the lake for some summer cooking.

Fit and Finish is fairly good
The seal on the lid could be a little tighter, but I'll fix it with a rope seal
Grill Grates fit like a teeter totter, so gonna get some new ones that will lay flat
Paint got a little soft on the lid, so we'll keep an eye on it
Controller kept the temp within 5° for the most part.  A few times that it overshot by 50°, and took a while to come back to normal.  I attribute this to a few extra pellets being dumped.

Overall, it's a pretty darn good bang for the buck
There's some good Pellet Grills for under $1,000, including a RecTec

Nice info about the GMG JB....Is this the "new" model? I understand they are up-grading their product line.

Hey Todd, love seeing new toys being used!  I was going to cook 8 butts this weekend for church but the bottom fell out and we have had nothing but rain  :-[

Now if I could talk Kimmie into one of those fancy pellet grills I might have had a chance to pull it in the work shop and cook them.  My home built pellet rill wont hold more than two butts while set up for infrared

Nice new pellet pooper Todd.

I like the wheels on it. It has 600 square inches of grill space. And their pellet chamber is unique with it's directional air openings. Creates a mini fire tornado.

That kind of pellet consumption on a grill with that amount of space and being non insulated is not too bad. Get the blanket they have available or you can use a welding blanket to keep more of that heat in.

GMG can run at 150F and has a ambient temp sensor that bumps up the amount of pellets to start with for a quicker warm up on cold days.

Always make sure the hopper lid is closed well. This uses a positive draft hopper fan so if the lid is open just a little this can interrupt air flow. The positive draft hopper is good for preventing burn back in the auger tube.

Keep us updated on your results after getting some pellet mileage under it's belt ;)

That's awesome Todd, Someday I envision a pellet pooper next to my other grill. That don't match the wife's future visions :)

Good logic!   Heck I just tell Kimmie, you have over 50 pair of flip-flops and I have 14 grills seems unfair I need a few more grill to equal out  ;)
