I was ready to purchase a ceramic kamado and looking at about $1000 or more cost but while at Lowes and I notice a Char-Griller Kamado Kooker on sale. The reduce price and military discount was too hard to pass up so it came home with me.

I think it fits right in.

Cooks good at high temp but I am not liking the low and slow smoke quality.
I am not sure if it is me, the Akorn or my procedure.
Any and all help will be appreciated.

Nice score Art!

That's a awesome looking cooker!! I use a pitmasterIQ on my primo for low and slow cooks. http://www.pitmasteriq.com/ They have a attachment that will slide right in the air intake on your Acorn. I see they have a new model coming but I have the 110. It really saves a lot of time checking the temp every 10 minutes.

Great score. Lost Arrow has had real good cooks with his.

Ya but Lost Arrow would have real good cooks with a tin can and some coal. ;D

Looks nice.

You know with grill grates and a air controller I bet it will hit some serious grilling temps Art!

A temperature regulated air fan is a good idea if you prefer a close range of low temperatures while smoking.
The cooker is so well insulated that a tiny increase of airflow will markedly increase the cooker temp.
As the temperatures increase in the cooker just the convection airflow increasing will slowly cause the temperature to increase.

How do you like Briquets in the Char-Griller Kamado Kooker???
-
Nice purchase Savannah. As with all new things, comes a new learning curve. With all of your experience I'm sure you will figure this out and succeed with flying colors. I look forward to your cooks on the Kamado. By the way, before getting a pellet grill I was considering an egg. They seem to be both very versatile and efficient. Good luck!

How do you like Briquet's in the Char-Griller Kamado Kooker???
I used lump for my first few months, but with the large ash catcher you can use briquittes.
I now use briquettes , can't tell the difference just so I can keep only one kind of charcoal.

Thanks LA and that confirms what I am finding out when I used briquettes the other day.
If you do not use the complete load of briquettes are you able to leave them in the Kooker and use them again like Charcoal Lump?
-
Yup, you sure can. That is what most people do with a WSM. The left over briquettes can be reused but remember that they will not reach their maximum heat because they are past that. You can use the left over briquettes to light new briquettes or mix em with new briquettes........it's all good.........

That's good to know and I will add a load of briquettes for charcoal flavor steaks today and save the left over briquettes for later.
Thanks.

I took y'all's advice about using charcoal briquettes.
Four pounds Stubb's Stubb's All-Natural Charcoal Briquets,

Four pounds briquettes looks like this in the Akorn.

Here is the graph showing a time of 28 hours more than long enough for an overnight cook.

I can relate
a man and his toy ;)
I'm in love with my 22"OldSmokey
X2! Best 60 bucks I ever spent. I love a Komodo style cooker, but my skills on those are limited. Tried a few times and always had temp overshoot that took forever to come down.
Old Smokey just sits there and behaves. A little nudge to the bottom vent after starting and it's cruise control. If I did go for a Komodo style, I would defiantly follow Art's lead and get
a Stoker. He's had some experience with those.

The Que-110 is a good Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) but my point of my post is not ATC's.
The main point is 28 hours of cook time out of 4 pounds of briquettes in the Akorn.

and it's an insulated shell instead of ceramic
Yep, so it is neither a Ceramic nor Kamado Cooker so not sure what to call it. :)
