I had one of these back in the 70's.  Great versatility but not huge cooking space.  Have fun!

Looks like a copy-cat of the original Portable Kitchen that started in Tejas in the early 1950's and are now made in Little Rock Arkansas.  http://pkgrills.com/

That is an awesome find and will provide some great retro grilling. That aluminum can really hold the heat in!!

It does look exactly like a portable kitchen.  I wonder why it's branded charbroil.  Do you have any idea how old it is?

Bill this was Char-Broil's copy/version of the PK
this one has to be late 60s~early70s
I had the same sized Char-Broil model but late 70s that had the slide out ash drawer (sheet metal) and the notches for the rotisserie. It was a great grill but had too many air leaks to slow cook in because of the ash drawer and the rotisserie notches in the lid

1st "experimental" cook on the vintage grill
I thought I'd do a chicken, can't mess it up  ;)
scorched the skin on the breast side in the 1st 30'mins
dang, this rascal got hotter than I thought
using natural lump oak charcoal and some hickory chunks
90'mins !! to temp
need to let it get to temp next time before I put in the meat (http://i50.tinypic.com/20ztyfl.gif)

sure did taste good  ;D

Nice score!

I think that was Charbroil's spin on the "portable Kitchen" grills. It looks like it's in incredible shape and should last darn near forever being cast aluminum.

That's a slick little grill!   I bet you could find some Diamond Plate to replace the cedar with..

Ok, I have to ask about the Old Milwaukee can...    :D

"Ok, I have to ask about the Old Milwaukee can...    :D

I trimmed the can down neatly with a pair of scissors
then punched a hole and threaded a key ring though it
it acts as a heat shield and hanger basket for the transmitter of my Maverick ET-732

a buddy gave me some leftover grill racks from rigs he's gotten rid of
one was almost a perfect fit for my vintage CB charcoal grill
all I had to do was trim it at one end
sanded & brushed on the rusty spots
fired up the grill
& mopped on some vegetable oil to season the grill

Gotcha Captain. The Portable Kitchen was designed primarily for briquettes. Lump might be too hot with the way that aluminum holds the heat...just sayin.............my neighbor has a PK and she only burns Kingsford in hers. She uses lump in her UDS.......

after that cook with the lump - I totally agree

but that lump is going to be great for the grillin' cooks (http://i50.tinypic.com/20ztyfl.gif)

experimental cook #2
I had a scrap piece of stainless
I riveted a couple of hanger brackets on it
it became the new "heat shield"
still using up the oak lump charcoal
I really like how the chicken is responding to the indirect heat (http://i50.tinypic.com/20ztyfl.gif)

Ok, I've gotta ask, what kind of chicken is that? I don't see any legs and it looks like its wearing a long dress.  Or is it just the angle of the camera shot?

Post by: CaptJack on February 11, 2012, 09:50:03 PM
..well.....
the pics make it look sexy
but don't be fooled
it had a great charcoal smokey flavor
but the skin was chewy
and the meat was tough and dry
i should have brined the bird..
but...
not even in the same league as a bird in the SRG !!

It looks like a case of nostalgia vs technology Jack......But maybe brining - and a water pan for some moisture will help :)

it didn't lack for moisture
it was sitting in it's own rendered fat  :'(

the beauty of the SRG is all the fat runs off into the grease trap
and infrared is truly superior for poultry
nothin' like that crisp skin (http://i50.tinypic.com/20ztyfl.gif)

Since I have been on the forums with you Captain...I have never seen you cook with charcoal so much...how are liking it compared to the other heat sources you have used??
Title: Re: new - vintage/retro - toy

smoke - when I got on the Char-Broil forum was when I bought my SRG - Thanksgiving 2010, it was my discovery of the infrared cooking technique. Right after that I replaced my old gas grill for an Urban RED 2-burner infrared grill. I really like the infared cooking technique but it is a faster "roasting" technique than traditional BBQ techniques.

After hanging out with you guys for over a year, I have really enjoyed and learned a lot from many of the in-direct charcoal cooks that have been posted - your's & Dave's in particular.

Back, many moons ago, when I had a Char-Broil aluminum charcoal grill I never did a in-direct cook in it. I only used it for a grill. When the gas grills got popular I switched for the convienence. I did experiment with in-direct cooking on my gas grill but it doesn't give you the same flavor as charcoal, even with a wood chip pan.

I started doing searches on my local Craigslist and came across this old Char-Broil aluminum grill. I had the other pieces I needed so I thought it would be a fun toy to play with in-direct charcoal cooks.

I've been very pleased (except for that 2nd chicken, but I know that problem ;)
