Title: Harbor Freight meat grinder
Post by: pz on January 03, 2014, 11:28:55 PM
Anyone have experience with this unit?  I know Harbor Freight is not known for the best quality tools, so maybe this is too good to be true

I would see if it is eligible for their extended warranty. It may be cheap enough to make sense - if you are not planning on using the grinder much at one time, and let it work at a pace it can handle.

I wouldn't waste my money, looks like a real cheap unit. I would save until I had enough to get a good one. You may want to check with Cabela's or LEM and see about a refurbished unit. I have had good luck buying refurbished stuff.

If your going to go with a cheapy (like me)  try and make sure it has a reverse for when it starts to bog down. They don't have the cabelas model I have but THIS (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Home-Cabin/Food-Processing/Food-Grinders%7C/pc/104798880/c/104723280/sc/104364180/Cabelas-Pro-Grinder/714623.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffood-grinders%2F_%2FN-1101293%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104364180%3Fgclid%3DCKCjnIKGmLwCFUlJKwod3R8AAA%26gclsrc%3Dds%26WTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104791680%253Bcat104723280&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104791680%3Bcat104723280%3Bcat104364180) is similar.

PZ I have a $50 grinder & if your goal is to grind up a chuck roast to make hamburger or a butt to make ground pork it'll work well.
Well we tried processing deer  with it & it wasn't good  :o
We now have a bigger grinder!

My advice is to stay away from it.  Harbor freight pushed that same grinder at Christmas time as if $54 is a sale price. It's not.

That exact same grinder sells for right around that same price on Amazon and a few other places all day long, and gets quite a few bad reviews.

That's my 2¢

I have the one from Northern Tool and has worked well for 3 years. The grinding plates will rust easily between use if you don't keep them oiled. I only do 5 lb. at a time, so not really much of a workout for thing.

When I was looking at grinders I think Ruumm recommended that one.

I've bought a lot of power tools and such from harbor freight and northern tools over the years and most of it has been good for weekend use but not for heavy use. That being said I have dealt with an importer a couple of times that uses the same Chinese factories as they do and he explained that it's all made on the same line, northern tools stuff is made by the second shift with a little better exterior finishes and the harbor freight stuff is made by the lower paid third shift with cheaper exterior finishes. I don't know if this applies to the meat grinders but I have taken some power tools apart after they broke and they do have the same interior parts.
