Title: MES 40" Smoker
Post by: TwoPockets on April 15, 2012, 11:33:40 AM
Does anyone have one of the larger 40" Masterbuilt electric smokers? I have a chance to pick one up for half price (or less) because one of the wires on the connector that plugs in the digital console is loose. I should be able to fix that easily. I have heard that it takes a really long time for these to come up to temp. Is this so? If anyone has one, would you recommend getting one or not?

They are a good "project"  if you can get it cheap enough Ken. They are not that well insulated, and the heating element should be up-graded. As well, you may want to look at a PID for real control of it.

If you can get it for under $100, and it is still un-used, I would say - try it. THen, if it needs help doing the job, muebe can steer you on the details to up-fit it Ken

Best of Luck!

Ken it is a good solid unit. The heating element is a little undersized for the size of the cabinet but that can be upgraded.

I believe that is the same one my wife's cousin Poolshark has and he has made some great eats from it.

It can be easily upgraded with a PID and I can help you with that if you wanted...

Two, I think out of the box it would be a good cooker, & if you want it's easy to make into a great smoker

I have the 30".  The only thing I've heard about the 40" is the slow warm up.  I would buy it and if not happy with the speed...upgrate heater.  I really like the MES and the one you are looking at is upgraded with larger wiring and easier -to -get -to back to work on the inside from what I understand.  Dee

... and dee can post a pictorial tutorial on how to upgrade the heating element, install the PID, and smoke your first unicorn.
