Title: I know I saw it here somewhere ?
Post by: catinatree on June 30, 2014, 07:13:47 PM
I remember seeing a mod device that mounts over the chimney exhaust port on the inside of pellet grills to, as I remember, to even out the grill heat, wouldn't it also keep the smoke lower over the grates also ?

and what was it again ?

Here you go! It is called a down draft hood. This place (http://shop.pelletgrillaccessories.com/category.sc?categoryId=8) has them for the Grid Iron,
Traeger and Green Mountain grill. A little pricey but yes it does even out the heat and keeps the smoke lower over the grates. I have it on my grid iron. Here is the post  (http://www.letstalkbbq.com/index.php?topic=9815.0)
on how it is mounted.

I had one in a Jim Bowie by GMG and it worked very nice. It really helped with stabilizing the temps from left to right as well as keeping the smoke down at meat level before it exited the pit.....

they make em for the Rec Tec as well.......

Can someone explain how the down draft hood works?  How does the smoke finally find its way out of the body?  Sorry to be so clueless.

Having the opening at cooking grate level basically drafts the heat and smoke down lower to the lower opening. Most grills are made with the smokestack opening up way to high. That is the course the heat and smoke will follow. Lowering that exit "forces" the draft of the pit to go out the lower opening. You also get the added benefit of having more even cooking temps from side to side.

This was a very simple explanation from a very simple man  :)

Also: I have used flexible aluminum dryer duct tubing in some of my charcoal grills and it makes a world of difference. This is just  a great pellet grill mod.  8)

From one very simple man to another, thank you for your explanation.  I understand it clearly. :)  Thank you very much.

I owned a Traeger at one time. Not sure I would have wanted that "add on" but for those that do, drive on!  Just my opinion and I have found that my opinion is usually incorrect. :P

By the way Smokeasaurus, I used to work at 9180 San Fernando Road, Sun Valley, CA, lived in La Cresenta, back in the mid 70's - the late 80's and volunteered at the Wildlife Waystation !
And thank you for the great input !
