Hickory Smoked Salt
« Reply #-1 on: June 29, 2012, 05:36:42 PM »
I only had a few chunks of Smoked salt left in the grinder I got for Christmas. So I decided it was time to make some more. I and using Mediterranean Sea Salt. I also want to do some checking on the burn time in my A-Maze-N-Pellet Smoker. I filled up one full row with pellets for this time test.

I got a couple large coffee filters from the gas station and put the salt on top of them inside of my Weber kettle grill.

AMZNPS starting to smoke. The dark spots in the salt are the few odd pieces I had left. They is getting some more smoke.

30 seconds after closing the lid we had smoke!

After a minute. We had LOTS of smoke!!

Will post more when the smoke stops coming out or it's time for bed

I ended up getting 4 1/2 hours of smoke from the one row. The salt took on some really nice color. Would have been better if someone would have gone out and stirred the salt around. I think I will hit it with some more smoke today. Sorry about the pictures the lens on my cell phone was dirty.

Smoke just finished

After looking at the salt and seeing a bunch of white salt. You get white salt when the bonehead smoking it doesn't stir the salt. I said to myself "SELF, We gonna hit it with some more smoke." This time I loaded up two rows of the pellets smoker, for a down and back burn. Timer set and 9 1/2 hours later this is what I found. I couldn't decide which pic I liked best so here is both of them.

There is two pictures of the salt as well.

I am thinking I could realistically expect a 15-16 hour burn time if I filled the pellet smoker completely.

This looks like a good idea.  I have the same A-Maze-N-Pellet Smoker, salt, and several different flavors of pellets.  I may just have to give this a try.  Nice job Chris.

Do you ever add more smoke to it or leave it as is?

Mike if I am not happy with the flavor of the salt. Yes I can put it back in the smoker and add more smoke to it. The salt in the second burn test is the same salt from the first one. So that salt has gotten about 14 hours of smoke.

Art I cant wait to see how you like the different flavors of smoke. I only have hickory here. Let me know if the flavor changes with the different pellets

The salt I have smoked before just naturally turned dark just sitting in the container.

tenpoint 5, I have an MES.  I have the following questions:
What is the best salt to smoke?
How long and at what temp should I set my smoker?
Have you ever done pepper?  We have bought some smokehouse pepper put out by McCormick and my wife loves it.
