Outdoor Gourmet Pellet Pooper
« Reply #-1 on: July 05, 2012, 05:22:15 PM »
Has anyone seen or any one know anything about this pellet grill. I was in Academy Sports and Outdoors walking thru the grills when I spotted this.

This thing looks just like a Traeger inside. Even the  flame guard and grease slide are identical. The hopper did look smaller than the 20lb capacity of the Traeger. I didn't see any info other than whats on the pic here.

Mike, I work for Academy and I can't tell you 100% for sure, but can tell you it is probably a safe bet it is made by Traeger and rebranded as Outdoor Gourmet which is Academy's store brand.

They also have a good price on 20lb bags of pellets.

I have been seriously thinking about buying this one and giving it a try. Only problem is that while that is a great price on a pellet pooper, divorce lawyers are very expensive. No more cookers till my wife gets her kitchen redone.

There are several "Treager clones" appearing on the U.S. market now....ever since the Tregers have been made in China, this has been happening....The Chinese manufacturing folks are great at copying anything. I am not saying it is any better or worse than a Treager ( if it is a copy)

I like cookers that both grill & smoke since I often smoke then grill ( probably my most common cook)
Muebe's pellet grill & T2 's ( yoder?) look like they do a great job.

Good Point LA....

Mike - one of the reasons I chose the Yoder is the heat range that it has ...150F to 600F. I can get great sear on a piece of meat or I can smoke it. The Memphis, the Mak,, and maybe some others can do this....

Anybody know how hot you can get a Traeger. I've never really cranked it up other then to season it when I got it. Maybe I'll try a steak on it soon to see how it does.

Tee Traeger's patents ran out several years ago so now there are other companies able to copy the auger/firepot design.

I believe that one is made by Brinkmann and re-badged for Academy Sports...

Mike you can grill on a Traeger but not that well with the drip pan in. You are limited with the max 450F temp of the thermostat. When you build your PID eventually you won't be limited by that temp ;)

But if you remove the drip pan and put some flavorizer bars over the burn pot and grill grates well that is a whole different story.

Yeah, those look like a Traeger clone.

I know that price looks good, but I will tell you what bothers me immensely about these grills. Who makes them, and why can't I find any good info on them?

Try searching for them online and you'll see what I mean. I can't even find these listed on Academy Sports website.

At some point you will want/need customer service. Will you be able to get it with this grill at that price?

It's something to find out before purchasing.

You're a absolutely right. I'm not looking to purchase one. I have a Traeger with a reputable dealer thats been in business for years that makes house calls. This was just something I saw while walking thru Academy. :)

What they said!

What I like about that model (if I was looking at buying it) is the wide stance of the legs.  And the Ortech controller. (next generation Traeger controller - almost OEM, until they parted ways for whatever reason).

Ahhh...that would make sense!  I have also seen that company selling the Smoke Daddy is selling a Treager clone as well. And there are some others on E-bay.
I wonder if they are still a "part for part" copy?   That could be an advantage for some....But it would also be nice if someone would try to make tweaks to the old proven design too....
