To soup or not to soup?
« Reply #-1 on: December 29, 2014, 05:05:17 PM »
Had a big ham hock I had left over from the 35 lb hamzilla I made for Christmas. Also had a big bone from the ham (Had 2 but gave one to the daughter's dog for Christmas dinner.)
I was going to smoke the hock low and slow but then I remembered that I never have made homemade soup. So I looked up a bunch of recipes. Most were for ham and bean soup, some were for vegetable type soup. So I decided to take a little bit from each recipe.

So here are the guys I chose (marshmallows and banana's in the upper right are just photo-bombing the picture and aren't part of the team.)
Meant to include celery but I forgot to buy it at the store and I am too lazy to go back.

Put some oil in the pot, added the hock and the bone, after that I chopped the garlic, onion, green onion, and carrots and threw them in. Let them all brown for a while and then added enough chicken broth to cover the hock and bone.
Now it is simmering for a few hours and then I will add the rest of the players.

UPDATE
Took the hock and the bone out and took the meat off them.

Found a couple more ingredients in the fridge.

Threw the meat, mushrooms and the rest of the players into the pot. I'll make a cheese type sauce with some milk and add at the end.

Letting it all simmer for an hour or so. More to come----

Last update:

Added a cup of milk and 8 oz of chipolte gouda. Put them in the microwave and melted them.

Put the cheese sauce in the pot and let it simmer for a while.
All done, scooped out a bowl. Not sure if the picture is that great but the soup sure is. I think it is a winner. I think it is because no one ingredient dominates. You can taste just about each ingredient.

Well tomorrow I try my first try at homemade pasta.

Great looking soup Gus. I make soups all winter.
I made fresh pasta yesterday with my pasta press for my KitchenAid. It was small macaronis and bucatini, long macaronis. Nothing like fresh pasta. Made mac & cheese with the macaroni. Still working on the dough recipe, gotta make it thinner for the press and thicker for the pasta attachments go figure.  Pam  .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.
