Chimney Starter Tip

I just got my small Weber Chimney.  Thanks for whoever mentioned it here, what a great way to save on charcoal ! ! !

I know a couple of months back, we were discussing using those Weber Lighter Cubes instead of newspaper.

Great idea, right ?  But how to best use  the cube?  Well, I took bought a small can of sliced black olives - was making a seven layer dip anyway - and now use the can as a platform for the cube.  It works with both the large and small Weber Chimneys

.

I'm sure that others have thought of this, but I just haven't seen it shown here.

I have found that the cubes emit a tall enough flame that they work quite well on the charcoal grate...but I am going to try that can idea. I think it might get the flame up higher thru the chimney for a faster starter time..... 8)

Looks like the Big Dawg is gonna teach this Old Dawg a new trick  :) :)

Great idea Dawg! I use the cubes all the time and I also have the small chimney. A definite charcoal saver!

The mini weber doesnt need a lift for the fire starter, the regular weber works OK without.
The big chimney I have for the big cooker at LostArrow must have a lift.

That's been my experience too, just set the cube on the charcoal grate and the flame from the cube reaches to coals with no problem.

Good idea Bill!
I was putting the cube in my mini Weber chimney to get things going but after dumping there is a bit of cube mass left in the chimney. I always shudder to think that by chance occasionally that mass may end up in the coals. I like this or any of the ideas thrown out to start the cube on a can of choice!  8)

I'm sure that others have thought of this, but I just haven't seen it shown here.

I always do that..just set it on the grate and let'r rip, when coals are ready dump 'em. Just makes sense to me. Can't wait for this global warming to get over with so I can complain about how hot it is, in other words, I'm ready to go camping...NOW.  .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

I never actually tried just setting it on the grate.  I guess I thought that it could fall through after it had burned for a while.

But I do think it may speed up the lighting by putting the flame close to the charcoals themselves.

One time when I tried just lighting a small batch in a can, I found it difficult to keep the cube lit with briquets on top of it.

It takes about 20 minutes to get a full chimney ready and I put the starter on the grate and it doesn't fall
