Paint peeling on my RecTec RT680
« Reply #-1 on: March 07, 2018, 10:04:51 AM »
I bought my RT680 back in January 2015 and it has been bulletproof other than my paint peeling on the top of the lid.   (Says a lot for stainless lids like MAK's) ;)

I am a little dissapointed but I can't complane about the way it cooks or the great service I have had with this grill.    Ben and the guys are wonderful to deal with

Over the next week or so I'll post on how the "repaint" is coming along

I got with Rec Tec and they are shipping me new paint for the repair.   I wanted to replace the lid with the new porcelin but they are out and only have the black lids in.

I hope to have this repaired soon and will post as I go

I had the same issue Tommy.....

When I called and asked about it - they sent me a spray can of Rustoleum High Temp, Flat Black Paint....I was not impressed.

But - because the Rec Tecs of this series are powder coated, I know that "paint" does not stick to powder coating ( even if it was the same color... ::)...) and I think that they do not really have an answer for us on this.

In balance - part of the price of a Rec Tec is that it is only powder coated steel... and not 304 grade stainless.
A considerable cost difference to manufacture......

That spot along the back of the lid gets real hot. Most grills do at that spot. I like it better if just high heat paint is used. So much more convenient for the user to touch up.

How hard would it be to strip off the powder coat and then repaint with high heat paint??

Like Smoke said it is a hot spot.

Mine NEVER sees rain or bad weather.  But it is not stainless so wear and tear do take there toll.

I knew at some point I'd be touching up this grill so no biggie but others are complaning but it is what it is.

Next grill will be a MAK, but for now a little paint issue is NOT a big deal ;)

Great attitude Tommy. That Rec Tec will take care of you until you get a MAK.  I can not even describe the quality of the MAK to you. I am in awe. Save your coin, it is worth it and more.

I am, just got to stop going under the knife  ??? for a year or two

Hey, way I look at it is this thing has been perfect as far as cooking and smoking so all good     Look at the issues folks have with CharBroil emitters coming apart after a short time (mine includded)  and seems like Weber is having paint issues on some grills .

Nothing is perfect it's just what you expect  in the BBQ world.  I have seen some (not many) folks gripe about MAK's so just showes you there are good and bad out there ;)

Besides, they have great service and I have NEVER had a time where I'd call and they never answer

Tommy, could you trim that edge with a piece of stainless or aluminum?

It is hard to find unhappy Rec Tec owners. Ya know, paint peeling.......we run these pits at all sorts of temps for hours on end......at the end of the day it is all about the food and it does not know that the smoker it is in has messed up paint...............

My paint is due in today and I hope to start the repair soon.    But I have a question,   if  i use a high temp seal at the top of the lid this should keep the lid from doing this again BUT wil it change the way my grill smokes??    I was told that adding a seal could keep it fom breathing correctly but I can't see this as an issue........

Thoughts?? ??

Thinking of using somethiong like this

Tommy that is the same one that I put on the Grid Iron about 4 years ago. Didn't hurt the smoke and I believe it actually helped with the smoke leaks. You can give it a try and if you don't like it, it will peal off.
