Thinking of using somethiong like this

Tommy that is the same one that I put on the Grid Iron about 4 years ago. Didn't hurt the smoke and I believe it actually helped with the smoke leaks. You can give it a try and if you don't like it, it will peal off.
Good, Thanks that' what I was hoping for

Does it hold up well?  Long term

I haven't had to change mine in 4 years plus. It probably needs a new seal on it now as the one on there is well worn. Still not leaking so until it does I am going to leave it alone.

I got mine in 2016 used it in the summer and for the rest of the year then covered it for 3 months into the following year.
I went to take the cover off and thats when I noticed the paint peeling.  Its peeling on the bottom portion of the barrel
on the right hand side near the lid.

I then contacted them and they sent me a can of paint and instructions on how to resolve the issue.
My paint job only lasted 6 months and then it started peeling again.  I called them back and they sent me
another can of paint.  We'll see how it goes.

I noticed on their website they are now offering grills with a brushed stainless steel on the bottom of the barrel.
Probably because of the paint peeling issue.

Oh also my igniter went out :(

I do really like this smoker.  Its the best looking out there and it produces some really good results.
There customer support is spot on too.  You won't find that anywhere else!

I just dont want to have to repaint this thing every year. :(

Dirk the Rec Tec you have is fully capable unit. I owned one for a few years - and mine to had failing powder coating. Alas - their only answer was a can of spray paint.
When MAK had this problem - several years ago - they offered to re-do with POWDER COATING if you sent in the parts affected. Spray paint will NOT adhere to powder coating, so - you will notice that anywhere you oversprayed onto the original powder coating...it will flake off after a short time of use.
So, while I think that the Rec Tec is a good price point product - I cannot say from my experience that they offer as good a customer service as I have experienced with MAK. And...the MAK 1 Star is not that much more than a Rec Tec 680. I do think they offer the best Chinese built pellet grills to date. But, again - they are built to a price point and the manufacturer can only afford to do so much I suppose....
