Biggles got wood!
« Reply #-1 on: October 02, 2013, 09:31:31 PM »

I was so excited to go out today and buy some chunks of seasoned wood to grill with.  It's been over 10 months since I've done it.  And it's been maybe 8 to 10 years since I had a grill like this Charbroil 940x.  Mine was a 1971 version and I cherished it, I knew what I had.

I grabbed me a bag of hickory with chunks the size of large golf balls and a package of beef ball-tip roast cut in to steaks.  Doused with Montreal Steak Seasoning made it darned easy, there's nothing special here.  Today's meal was a simple run through to see if this grill is as awesome as I remember it.  And it is, I dearly loved every moment of it.  The smells, the action, the ability to easily add wood to a charcoal fire.  Even setting the beef on the cast iron grates took me back.  The fire isn't so darned hot that it singes the hairs of my arms off!  I can lay it down and know it'll be just fine, no rushing to turn or get it off the fire.

The complex flavors of smoke that was added to the meat was exactly as I remember it.  Not the tangy twang of creosote, just the rich flavors that make the meal that much better.  And, with the gentle heat and the size of the grill I was able to sear and set aside and let the smoke & heat do its job.  Evenly cooked meat!

I lurved it and can hardly wait to fire it up again.

I believe that grill is a '97, give or take.  Hooboy, it feels so perfect, so right.  Time for some serious pork action baby!

I've probably posted this here before, but I dunno.  It was lost for a while, it's an OLD shot.  I found it again not too long ago, thought you guys would appreciate it.

Thank you all, was fun.  Something else is different, the smell in my clothes.  The smoke and grease from the weber was noticeable, but nothing crazy.  The leftover smells hours later is still pungent and awesome!

The fire grate and grill surface looks to be a 8 3/4", looks like quite a bit more.  The cook time on the meat was about the same, oddly enough.  I would have thought it was going to be noticeably longer, nope.

As a moderator the title of this thread gave me the chills and I had my bony finger pointing shakily over the delete topic button.  :D

Now I am just darn hungry for some wood fired steaks. Get a cover for that classic Dr.B and it should outlast all of us  :)

  Good morning everyone!

I thought for a little while about the title, went back and forth.  I decided to go for it and throw caution to the wind!

I woke up this morning and the tshirt I wore smelled like I'd been out camping for a few days, awesome  I'm just so giddy!  It's like every day is Saturday.
