First steak on Yoda.

Hey Gang! Since I get home earlier on Saturdays I thought I'd try out the Grilling Grates with a couple of little steaks.

Here they are, all clean and new lookin'. They won't be that way long.

I've read posts from folks that have used these in several different configurations. I decided to remove the standard grate on the left and put the GGs in it's place, and since I'm basically lazy I left the heat diffuser/drip plate in place. I also left the damper pushed all the way in.

After starting the cooker and dialing in 450* I placed a few little 'taters on the upper grate.

I let the potatoes bake for about an hour (or maybe a little more) before the steaks went on, and that turned out to be a bit too long. The skin was hard but not burnt, but still a little too 'well done' for us.

Since this was my first try at grilling on Yoda I had to go solely by what I had read. Since the steaks were fairly thin I decided to start with the first side on the grate for 2 min., then rotate and grill another 2 min. for the sear marks, then repeat for the other side. Here's how they looked just before I pulled them off.

All in all I was impressed with how the cooker and the GGs worked. The meat turned out med-well (we prefer med-rare to med) but that can be corrected with a bit of trial and error, and lots of practice.

Oh, I have to include a little note on why I call my Yoder "Yoda". My dad (a southern born and raised man) would have pronounded the Star Wars character 'Yoda' as 'Yoder', and from the first time I saw this brand of cooker the name triggered that amusing memory. Probably sounds silly to others, bit it tickles me.

Thanks for lookin'...

Remember their are two sides to the GG. Flat side makes some nice burgers

Brad has just come out with a new item... a flat plate that goes on top of the Grill Grates so you don't have to flip them over. I'm looking forward to trying it.

As for the Yoder, I have the Grill Grates on the left side and a standard grate on the right. I keep the diffuser/ drip plate in place for all my cooks (as you know it weighs a ton and is somewhat difficult to manhandle in and out of the Yoder). The only time I move the damper in is when I'm just using the Grill Grate section.

I also have the second shelf but have yet to use it. (I usually keep it out for food porn photos.)

I need to drill a hole on the right side for the thermometer probes. Does yours have a grommet around the hole?

I'm married to a Mainer -- she adds "er" on the end of some words and shortens a lot of "er's to "ah's".  She'd call your cooker a Yodah  ::)

Great looking groceries, by the way!

Thanks everyone! This was just a quick last minute decision to see if the ease and speed of 'grilling' on the Yoder would satisfy my basically lazy nature. I (and my wife) am happy to say that it does, and then some.

*Pappy - I look forward to trying that part too!
*sparky - Me too! This thing will be a long term toy, with high caloric benefits!
*chef - That's very interesting. Is there a link where I can see that?
*smokeasaurus - That's the exciting part! As the 'patina' grows it'll just get better!

So much meat, so little time...

Nice looking sear marks on those steaks!

And remember when cooking steaks you don't need sear marks on both sides and a Thermapen is your best friend ;)
