Hey Gang! Since I get home earlier on Saturdays I thought I'd try out the Grilling Grates with a couple of little steaks.
Here they are, all clean and new lookin'. They won't be that way long.
I've read posts from folks that have used these in several different configurations. I decided to remove the standard grate on the left and put the GGs in it's place, and since I'm basically lazy I left the heat diffuser/drip plate in place. I also left the damper pushed all the way in.
After starting the cooker and dialing in 450* I placed a few little 'taters on the upper grate.
I let the potatoes bake for about an hour (or maybe a little more) before the steaks went on, and that turned out to be a bit too long. The skin was hard but not burnt, but still a little too 'well done' for us.
Since this was my first try at grilling on Yoda I had to go solely by what I had read. Since the steaks were fairly thin I decided to start with the first side on the grate for 2 min., then rotate and grill another 2 min. for the sear marks, then repeat for the other side. Here's how they looked just before I pulled them off.
All in all I was impressed with how the cooker and the GGs worked. The meat turned out med-well (we prefer med-rare to med) but that can be corrected with a bit of trial and error, and lots of practice.
Oh, I have to include a little note on why I call my Yoder "Yoda". My dad (a southern born and raised man) would have pronounded the Star Wars character 'Yoda' as 'Yoder', and from the first time I saw this brand of cooker the name triggered that amusing memory. Probably sounds silly to others, bit it tickles me.
Thanks for lookin'...
