Pellet question
« Reply #-1 on: April 22, 2014, 10:11:14 AM »
I am going to order the amazing tube smoker from amazon and see that they have 1 lb bags of apple, cherry, etc pellets for $7-$10  each.  Looked on Lowes site and they have a 20 lb bag of mixed wood pellets for $16.99 and Home Depot has apple, etc. 20 lb bags for $22.  That seems to be an unbelievable price difference for the amounts involved..  I would think I would have to use that tube smoker many, many times before I would use 20 lbs but that it wouldn't  take many times to use 1 lb.  Comments???

Remember, the smoking tube is pre-filled with pellets so time the first use to see how long it goes.   Todd told me 2 hrs per 2 inch of pellets for hot smoke (cooking inside a smoker with heat on)   and if cold smoking they can go as long as 4.

Remember our sponsors, might get a good deal from them on pellets (just saying)

Which size tube smoker are you thinking of getting?  The 12" holds 12 oz of pellets, so a 1 lb bag is not even going to get you 2 cooks.

Get a bag of good pellets...they are not all created equal. Try to help out site sponsors whenever possible. That being said, getting a 20# bag or larger will save you a boatload of money in the long run.

Stay away from the "mixed wood" pellets from Lowes unless they're specifically made for BBQ'ing.  If they're heating pellets you don't know what kind of wood, lubricants, other chemicals or anything else that's in them.

I have used both blended pellets and 100% Flavorwood pellets. Blended pellets (such as an oak/apple blend) work absolutely fine in the tube, BUT...  I you want the best flavor, then stick with 100% flavorwood pellets. The difference is noticeable IMHO.

The tube is so efficient that it doesn't cost that much to operate it.

BBQ'rs Delight also makes 100% flavorwood pellets, which is what I use.

I get mine from BigPoppaSmokers.com, because they have the best price I have found:  $7.98 for 2 - 1lb bags with free shipping for orders over $40.  He also carries the pellet tubes for the same price, so you might save on shipping ordering everything there.

Get some of Milt's pellets. They are great for the tube smoker and the flavor they provide is fantastic!

You don't have to fill up the tube completely either. A small handful of Milt's will get you a couple hours of smoke.

Get some of Milt's pellets...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately, as far as we can tell, Milt's Pellets is out of business.

To be honest we are not totally sure what's going on. All we know is his website & email address are down.  There seems to be a few places around that still have some in stock.  I believe Todd at A-Maze-N products has some.

Tim may be able to shed more light on this.
