First Cook - What's first?
« Reply #-1 on: April 28, 2014, 03:18:13 PM »
Hi everyone!  Newbie question for all you seasoned veterans.  My Grand Slam is supposed to ship this week so I am thinking about what I should cook after the initial burn-in.  I see a lot of folks cook up bacon for a first cook (aka Pig Candy?).  Is that just to find out if there are hot spots on the grill or is there another purpose for that?  I can hardly wait to get my first brisket on there.

Thanks!!

Pork butt or naked fatty.  Both will splatter good to season the cooker and are tolerant of temp swings while you play with it and get dialed in.

Naked Fatty??????

Jimmy Dean sausage roll (naked meaning not stuffed with anything or wrapped with bacon) seasoned with your favorite rub.  Cook to around 165 internal temp and slice to serve.  A bacon weave will make it that much better.

NICE!!!!!!  We make our own homemade ground sausage and have a few different kinds in the freezer - I can certainly make up a couple of those!

I am really leaning this direction as it looks incredible!!  The "naked fatty" (LOL) sounds good too - maybe double up on it.

This is a true statement.  Pig candy is always 1st cook.  You don't want no bad juju.
