Let's fire up the Green Machine
« Reply #-1 on: June 26, 2014, 01:28:59 AM »
ok, don't laugh but lump is not the same animal as charcoal for fuel.  i know what charcoal will do and how much wood to add for flavor.  w/ the Green Machine i have no clue.  so, a little learning involved i believe in the beginning.  here she is ladies and gentlemen my Green Machine.

1st fire.  actually only the 2nd cook on the green machine.

i lite the lump in 4 little spots like i was told.  in 3 minutes i had a good little fire so i put the plate setter w/ the grill and closed her up.  after 10 minutes the GM was at......

since i haven't figured out how to control the temp yet i thought i would start w/ some abt's.

oh they came out good.

still had heat so let's cook some more.

brought the grate to the table to set up.

big smile.

must be FT time.

a bunch of unhappy smokers and kettles.   :(

oh, we are looking good now.

brought it in the house.

wife said, "is the skin crunchy?"  no dear it's not but it is cooked perfectly.  "i want crunchy skin plz".  fine......

took the plate setter off and then put grill back on.  let's get some crunchy chicken.

opened the bottom vent some more.

top one too.

were getting there.

love the smell of meat smoke.

i must say it was very good.  the wife loved it.

egghead here for good....... 8)

Like LA told me...
There's a learning curve with these things - yours is shorter than most.

I think your experience with the other grills will crossover to the egg.  Knowing how to control airflow is the biggest thing and you've been doing that with the Webers for years.

The thing I had to learn was to ease up to the target temp, making vent adjustment ahead of the temp so I don't overshoot it.

I'm sure you'll have the MACHINE under control in no time.

What a great cook Sparky....everything looks perfect.   I read somewhere that BGE lump is actually Royal Oak.  You can probably save some coin by hunting down some RO.........

Looks really good to me.  I saw a neighbor's brand new Kamado Joe last night.  My wife said, "Don't even think about it!"  Yes, dear.  I am holding out for the Uuni 2 for my birthday.

Better keep it away from the Webers...   It might 'accidently' end up in the pool.   ;)
