Title: Kingsford Professional Briquets - Costco Sale 6/9-7/3 2016
Post by: Toddler on May 30, 2016, 03:45:15 PM
I wanted to let you guys know that Kingsford Professional Briquets (formerly "Competition") will be going on sale at Costco from June 9th through July 3rd, 2016.  They will be selling the 2/18lb bag bundle for $15.69 after $4.30 instant savings.

I don't see much talk about these here, although I do see a lot of PBC owners say that the KBB charcoal flavor is too strong for them.  The Kingsford Professional Briquets light easily, don't have that KBB smell, and produce a lot less ash.  The only ingredients are wood char, starch (binder) and borax (to release from the press molds).  No coal or limestone, which is found in the KBB product.

Just thought I would pass it along.

I just picked up the two pack of regular KBB from Lowes for 9.99. I couldn't pass that deal up but I much prefer Stubbs but will use KBB in a pinch  :) I'll have to try those once and see how they are, thanks for the post!

Sure thing.  Long-time member here, but I obviously don't post much.  I'm a moderator on another BBQ forum and a KCBS pro cook and master judge.  I am interested in adding the PBC to my arsenal, but numerous comments about the heavy KBB flavor have helped keep my AMEX in my wallet (and owning a dozen other grills/smokers already).  So I'd love to hear feedback if any of you do try the Kingsford Professional Briquets.

I don't mind the standard Kingsford Blue charcoal flavor, but I can understand why it's not for everyone. I use Stubbs not because I dislike the KBB but because the flavor is much better IMO. It has a natural wood grilled flavor compared to the KBB

someone did post on here that they did try it...

"
I have. They seemed to have a lighter charcoal flavor to me but they burned a little hotter and faster than normal Kingsford."

Yeah, I saw that comment, but that's pretty sparse feedback.  My pro cookers are pellet units, which is about as clean as wood can burn, and pellets just don't impart much flavor to chicken.  Stubbs is quite a bit more expensive for me to get my hands on.  I'd love for someone familiar with Stubbs to tell me that the Kingsford Competition is a worthy substitute.  :)

I'll see if I an snag a bag this next week and give it a shot, I use stubbs all the time so I'm very familiar with the flavor profile

I have given up on KBB.  Our local South Florida Walmart is selling Royal Oak briquettes at $7.84 for a 2 x 12 lb pack.  A great deal for a wonderful product

I have not given up on KBB, but.....I will ONLY use it in a pinch!
I have been doing a side by side taste experiment for awhile now. At least in my family everyone including me very much prefers the cleaner taste of Royal Oak! I have been feeling this way for awhile but had four bags of KBB to use up. Down to one now, but Menard's had 18# bags of Royal Oak priced at $4.99 a bag. I bought 12 bags!

how is the heat from the royal oak? does it burn hotter or pretty much the same?

Smokin Papa Steve, hikerman -- you guys did notice that this deal is not for KBB, right?  It is for the Kingsford Professional (formerly "Competition") briquets.  It's just wood char -- it's a completely different formulation than the KBB.

Just wanted to put a plug in for Toddler.  He really knows what he is talking about and will provide excellent information on BBQ.  He may be modest but has done very well in competitions and is an excellence source for our questions.  Welcome to this forum; you will find in very friendly.

Hiya Toddler, I did see the difference.  I'm sorry if my comment took some of your thunder away!  I guess my comment was more about KBB vs RO. I know nothing about K Pro or Ro Pro but have heard good reviews of each. I prefer a neutral flavor from coal and enjoy adding a wood flavor of my choosing.

Welcome Toddler. I actually really like the Kingsford Competition. I picked some up one sale at Costco and it turned out to be a great find. Definitely a cleaner flavor than KBB but it does burn a little hotter and faster.

Good point to emphasize but I still am not enamored with Kingsford products.  However I would be interested to hear others comment about,Professional .  For now I will stick with Royal Oak briquettes and Stubbs, if my local Lowes has it in stock.

Never seen it before. If it is from Mexico, it might be mesquite.  We have a bunch of that here on the left coast..............

There is a science to mixing cocktails, sauces, rubs etc. Why not mix Charcoals blends & types?

You know like six pieces of this with five pieces of that & so on.  We mix in some wood with charcoal but why not charcoal with charcoal even three or four types for flavor & or temp.

Again, I am not a pro like most of you but I grew up with Kingsford & all my friends use it. Because of that I love that taste. When I have used others or been to some ones house it has never been a problem for me.

Interesting thread, never thought about the charcoal besides using briquettes vs lump.

I have used KBB before, but now am using Royal Oak and then something else that I picked up at the local BBQ supply store called Royal Oak Chef Selects briquettes.  The teams at competition were buying boat loads of the Chef Select the day of competition, so I thought to give it a try.  40lb for $19.  About .47/ lb.  A little more expensive than the KBB when on sale, but cheaper than the regular price.  Overall, no noticeable flavor and burns a little on the hot side from what I have seen.

I may wait for the Professional to go on sale again and try it out to compare it to the RO Select.

Wish I were a COSTCO member, I'd give it a try.

(Apologizing in advance for potential thread-jacking.)

But my question is this . . . . . Why do I (and by I, I mean me, my GF, my parents, my kids (and their families), my brother, sisters and their familes) seem to be the only ones who really don't have a problem with KBB.  I've never even really noticed a "taste" from the charcoal.

And it's not just on this forum, but on the couple of others that I drop in on from time time.  It seems like most people have a problem with that product.

Is my entire family (including In-Laws) just cursed (or blessed) with no taste buds?

I was wondering the same thing about my family BD. Been using KBB for years and no problems. I do prefer Stubbs, but at the price of 1 bag of Stubbs I can buy a 2 pack of Kingsford. I, personally don't like Royal Oak, but to each his own. I have used the Kingsford Comp before and it is okay but burns a lot faster.

I have never seen this brand here in South Florida.  But if it is made in Mexico, I would be wary about buying it. Last year I purchased a bag of Lump sold under the Visions brand (made in Mexico).  Worst ever product.  Took forever to get going and when it did, it was like the fourth of July fireworks coming out of the Chimney.  And the bag had about 30% wastage. I contacted the the company and they sent another bag.  Still had a lot of wastage and same problem so I ended up dumping it. I am sticking with made in USA products.

I checked the bag again yesterday and it doesn't say what wood it's made from. My guess is it's probably mesquite too. It does seeem to be a nice full bag of decent chunks and not so much small crap. Haven't used it yet.

I used some of this lump yesterday to grill some boneless pork chops. Nice medium sized chunks. Worked well.

I have never had an issue with taste using KBB, but the huge amount of ash was always a problem on long cooks in my UDS.  I started using RO lump & liked the result as long as I was going to cook 275+.  I tried Stubbs & that became my go to charcoal.  Most of the time, cooking chicken in my UDS, I used Stubbs only with no wood chunks.  Got a nice mild smoke flavor that did not overpower the chicken.   When I got my Assassin smoker, the team I bought it from & the company owner, Jeff Conley, both recommend Kingsford Competition (now Professional). I happened upon some closeout stock of KComp at Walmart for $2.50/bag & bought all the had.  I burns really well in the Assassin.  A little more ash than I expected but still like the results.  I did one short cook with a mix of Stubbs (only had less than 1/2 bag on hand) and RO lump.  Liked the result there also.

I guess I said all that to say this; I like the Kingford Professional (Competition) briqs much more than KBB. It has a cleaner smell starting upa fire & does produce less ash than KBB.  Don't have actual measurements, but it seems to me that Stubbs produces a good bit less ash that KPro.  I am more than willing to pay extra what I feel is a better overall product than KBB.

I purchased a bag of RO lump to try. I opened the bag.....with a scissors. The first piece on top was the size of my shoe. And then it had a ton of really small pieces that made a mess of my grill.
Not pleased with that purchase.

For my taste, KBB  is fine for grilling fast. Steak., Chicken wings.
KBB is too strong IMO for smoking.  I'm liking Stubbs and some hard wood chuncks for smoking. I've used Kingsford competition charcoal. It burns Hot and Fast.

For what it's worth, the SCA Steak Cooking Organization (a forum sponsor) and the Kingsford Company have teamed up and will pay most of the steak contest winners double the prize amount for winning an event for the balance of the year if using the Kingsford Professional Briquets.

Tie this in with the extra $500 dollars you can win by using the Grill Grates and a fellow can earn up to about $3500-$4000 for winning one of these cooks. That is more than what a fellow can win at most KCBS contests for a Grand Championship.
