Title: Winter Cook
Post by: ronman451 on January 01, 2015, 04:07:46 PM
So my wife thinks I'm bonkers, but I am dying to cook something in my new PBC, even though the mercury is hovering around 20 degrees...

I'm thinking the outside temp shouldn't be a deal-breaker, I kind of just expect to add some extra time to my cooks or maybe crack the lid to jack up the internal temp a bit?

Anyone have any experience/advice on cooking with this thing in sub-freezing temps?

Block the wind and check your food temps.

It was 18 degrees and snowing a couple of nights ago when I put -2- split chickens in my PBC. They were cooked perfectly in 2 hours, just like when it is in the 60's.

Go for it, hang your meat...............

I live in MN and typically cook outdoors year round. The biggest problem I have is wind - both for the cooker and for me (wind chill is a killer!) So if you can block the wind, everything else seems t work out ok - go for it!

I have cooked in temps as low as 30* without a problem so you should be fine.

Yep, leather jacket & chaps, and rainsuits have come in handy many times.  I haven't given in to heated gear though.

Me either but I can see why there out there and would use them on some days.

If I lived in a colder climate and still wanted to ride in the winter I probably do it to.

I got my PBC for Christmas, I used it under cover in the cold rain (upper 30s, low 40s) as a first cook.  Ribs and chicken were prefect.  I did have to adjust the vent to be a little more open (289ft above sea level- wikipedia), but the chicken was the most moist I have ever had.
