Hey everybody,
I just got my hands on a BESRG recently and am looking forward top doing my first cook this weekend. It's all seasoned and ready to go but I had a couple logistical questions...
I see a lot of questions that go over the various BE models. Is there a lot of difference cooking on the SRG versus the electric ones? Can I generally follow the same instructions?
When it comes to smoke chips, are they needed? Also, is the smoker box OK to start with? I've seen several folks mention the Tommy ring and it sounds like that is a better method for smoking.
How frequently should the smoke chips be changed during a cook? It sounds like about once an hour but I've seen times vary.
Finally, my wife picked up a pork should for my first cook. Any specific tips for this bad boy?

I apologize if there are some repeat questions. I found so much info in the forum so far and I've got a lot more to wade through.
Thanks,
Norm

Hi Pam,
Thanks for replying. I don't see the hints. I'm a bit of a newbie to using forums also. Am I missing a link somewhere or setting somewhere?
Thanks,
Norm

Hi Norm, I have done 126 butts in infrared so far and all turned out really good.
For your first try at the SRG try this....
1. Rub the butt with mustard then add a good rub to it. Just be careful a rub with a high sugar count will burn easy in infrared.
2. Start the SRG on high add wood chips or pellets to the smoker box. It will take about 15 mins give or take to get them smoking good.
3. Once the chips/pellets are smoking real good then place the butt in the basket with the half racks set around the middle so your not on the bottom of the basket. Keep the SRG on high setting for another 15 mins this will start a good bark forming on the outside.
4. Once the bark has started then you can turn the unit down to low or just below med setting. Now depending on the size of the butt it will take at least 4 hrs to reach 200 to 205 IT.
When the butt hits 205 (I find that's the best IT) pull it out and wrap in two sheets of HD foil and place in a cooler to keep it warm. It will need to stay in there for 2 hrs then it's time to pull and shred that bad boy up!
You can add apple juice when you shred it or even peach juice. The butt will not dry so my may not want to add anything.
Let us know how it does. Look through the SRG threads, you will find a lot of butts in the SRG there
Best of luck,
Tommy (TMB)

oops..hold please ...forgot to add some thing..
BEESR from Msradell
Pam, here's the temperature chart from the instructions:
1 125
2 175
3 225
4 250
5 275
6 300
7 325
8 350
9 375
10 400
11 425
12 450
13 475
14 500
15 525
Hope this helps! Since the heat is basically IR there's not a good way to verify the actual temperatures inside the BEESR.
CaptJack -that list makes sense since wood doesn't burn until 451° (George Orwell's book the wood chips don't smoke until the setting is 12~15. hope it helps...Msradall sent it to me years ago. .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

Thanks to both of you for the help! The good news is that it turned out great. My kids even told me it's better than what mom makes and that's pretty tough to beat. I definitely learned a couple things and have some ideas on how to improve for round two. I'm looking forward to trying different things as well.
Thanks,
Norm
