SRG on low, what is the temperature?
« Reply #-1 on: December 23, 2015, 11:42:09 PM »
Does anyone happen to know what the temperature is when the SRG is on the low setting? I know weather, wind can change this, but wanted to get a general idea. Have a 7lb rib roast I want to cook for Christmas, looking to cook it for a few hours til it gets to right temp, then in high for the last 10-15 minutes. Thanks for the info.

For what it's worth I measured 260 + or - 15 degrees on low.  But you need to remember time to finish is hard to predict.   Infrared cooking goes pretty quick even on low setting.  I mean I cook a 8 to 10 lb pork butt in 4 hrs

MAke sure you have a good thermometer and use the 10 min a pound ONLY as a starting point to watch the internal temp the pull when it hits the temp you want.

I cook my roast to an IT of 140 to 145 or so but lots of folks lull at 125 to 130

SRG on low 325-350 F, high 500+
Will cook faster than oven , BEST TO USE PROBE TEMP or an instant read frequently .
For planning the meals timing 90 min from meat into cooker
I sear on high for 20-30 min until outside of roast is seared then cut to low.
Pull 10 - 15 degrees before you reach desired temp, the internal temp will rise more than a conventional cook.
Let rest 25-30 minutes.
For rare I pull at 110-115F, medium 130F
Anyone who wants well gets an end piece!

Forgot ho mention that my SRG 's are both modified with vents on the lid so my temps will not be the same as non modified units

TMB and LA have given the best advice you could get ...
I installed a thermometer in the top of mine a while back. I cooked a turkey for the office party Wendsday and it ran around 350.
It's hard to do sometimes but remember IR does not cook like an oven. We have been drilled all our life to cook at some fixed temp in an oven and on the grills to some extent. That's not really the case with SRGs and TBEs ...
The most important thing is to watch the Internet temp. Follow LA's guild lines on pulling it.i pulled the turkey at 150 and by the time I got it off the stand and one the board it was 167.
You may find you don't need to finish it on high, I really don't expect you will. Let us know how it turns out. Post some pics...
 Good luck and Merry Christmas
