My first cooks in the SRG
« Reply #-1 on: May 03, 2016, 01:51:36 AM »
Man, I am loving this thing!  ;D Been giving it a workout.  (Trying to convince myself that I don't need to wait for Thanksgiving to throw in a Turkey)

Looking forward to a pork loin and hopefully some wings this weekend.

I've been making my accessories wish list (Father's Day is coming soon, ya know  ;) )  Any "must-haves"?

I've been thinking about the skewer holder...Anybody have any experience regarding the hanging vs. the on that stand upright?  I know it lists the upright version for the Turkey Fryer, but it would be fine in the SRG as well, right?

That looks great! As far as accessories are concerned, I have the veritical skewer holder but use it mostly in the PBC.  The one accessoriy I use the most on the SRG is the chicken leg holder it's nice cause you can hang chicken legs or use it as a second shelf.  Enjoy!   :)

Congrats on the grandson!  exciting stuff!

Yeah... the leg racks are gonna happen.  How many racks of wings can you fit in the SRG at once? (thinking I might need a couple sets of racks)

This is the Kabob holder you're using, right?

Yes that's the kabob holder,  I only have on set of chicken leg holders,  you could probably fit 2 sets if you wanted. I'm sure you have already figured this out but the higher up the hotter it cooks in the SRG

I'm back and working on  three hours of sleep ;)

get two sets of the leg holders this way you can do a lot of wings yet still use them as half rack.  If you buy another set of half racks then you can't get other uses out of them.

Get a turkey holder from a deep fryer, it works great for large chickens and turkeys.

A Tommy rings is great for adding smoke

If your gonna do butts then order another basket and cut the sides out makes it easier to remove large meats like butts, chickens/turkeys roast ect...     http://www.letstalkbbq.com/index.php?topic=697.msg6002#msg6002

I like that basket idea.  After just a few cooks, I can see the value of open sides.  I would have thought that the stability would suffer, but I guess not (based on that mass of meat you show in the pic...)

I need to hunt down the info on the Tommy Ring.  I've seen it mentioned several times, but haven't searched out the details.

Leg racks will be ordered soon.

Did some legs without 'em tonight.. :D .

Hey..a Tommy ring was named after our newest gpa Tommy...he knows more aobut an SRG & TBE than anyone..it is just a springform pan, the bottom comes out of it and you just put it in the bottom of the cooker and set basket on top of it. What is does is raises the bottom of the basket from the dead zone, the area where the flame gets started from and so you get an evener heat. It works. Go to the $ stores to get it. I know because he helped me  and everyone else,  with mine.  .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

I've seen a couple pics, and saw something about holes and air circulation, and something that looked like elbows... I'm very new to this stuff, and want to understand the "whys" as much as (if not more than) the "whats".

I'm sure it's all laid out in the forum, I just need to hunt it down...

I checked the Charbroil website, and it appears that currently the only leg racks they have are for the TBE. A rep response to a question about usage in the SRG garnered an item number for the racks built for it, but when I searched that number it came back "not found".

I'll be giving them a call to find out what's up.
