My first questions
« Reply #-1 on: August 30, 2016, 01:55:30 PM »
Since everyone has offered to answer questions, I do need help! I just sprayed the inside of the drum with canola oil, as well as the larger basket and the two shelves that sit in the basket. So my first question is, should I also spray the outside of the drum?

Second question: Should I season all those sprayed pieces at the same time.

Third question: Do I season it on high (I have the gas model Big Easy SRG), and how long do I leave it on to season everything properly.

Thanks everyone for the lovely welcome greetings and offers to help. I am a novice and pretty green one at that with all this outdoor cooking!

Spray everything and kick it up on high at the same time for about 30 - 45 minutes.  Then get you a greasy chicken and cook it, you will love it. Season it well, inject if you want to, try for a 3 - 6 lb chicken, nothing like leftovers.    .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

I don't think I would spray the outside of the drum...that exposes it to the flames of your burner - and - well...canola make a stinky, smokey fire.... ;D

Will do! I wasn't sure if I should put all the smaller parts and the grill top in there. So I'll spray that and the little basket too. Our Albertsons has a sale on chickens (this is the last day to use my coupon), so I'll get a couple of those - one for the freezer and one to use over the weekend. It's home made pizza tonight and pasta tomorrow.

Thanks I'll skip that. PS: I lived in Bakersville, NC for 8 years and never heard the term Hillbilly caviar. What is it?

Be sure its oil and not the non stick stuff.... Non stick spray is hard to clean off after a few cooks.

I used spray on Canola oil. Hope that will be OK, since the job is done!

I find spray oil tends to flake over time so I use oil out of a bottle.  If you see flaking just scrape off and use oil out of the bottle.   Peanut oil works very well , just remember to reseason every few cooks

Bakersville!...Did you need a translator???...It is SO hilly over there - people all have one leg shorter than the other so they can walk on the mountainsides.... :D :D :D

Darn, wish I knew that before I sprayed it. I checked the can and it's canola which I knew but it also says it's non stick. Oh well, I'll just have to deal with the cleanup down the line.

Thanks for this information. My next question was going to be how often I have to re-season the unit!

I re-season or wipe with oil every third cook when the units were new.

Now,  every now and then seems good.   Since I did sooooo many butts for church cookout the fat helped season and adding extra oil really was not necessary.   But I do wipe them down time or two during the summer with oil

After each cook, I let mine burn on high for a bit to burn off any residue, and then wipe it down with vegetable oil, then let it burn until it stops smoking.
