I have a new tool in the garage (the wife's craft room has spilled over into where she used to park, lol).

I have designed a simple sign for a buddy of mine that has struck out on his own and opened an auto repair shop. He has been super awesome to me over the years and I am beyond excited for him so I wanted to give him something for his place.

I have yet to carve it but it's ready to go when I have time to babysit the machine.

The lettering will be elevated (same height as the uncarved wood) and the carved out recess will be color filled, not sure which color yet. I am thinking about making the letters red, white and blue, the wrenches silver and not sure about the car or the "frame" yet. I may just leave the frame portion natural with a poly coat or stain it.

Suggestions are welcome!

I have decided to paint the inlay red, the letters white, the wrenches silver and the car black. The border will be stained and all will be clear coated. It should look great. I am just waiting on a v-bit I ordered to show up. I'll post the finished product when done.

Does the machine do the painting also or do you do that by hand?

I'll have to paint it. I'm going to test different methods to find what is easiest.

So I haven't made my friend, Brad, his sign yet but I did do a little sign for my "arcade" in the basement.

I'll get to his sign soon, I had to work the kinks out first, I think I'm ready for his now :)

Thanks Bob. I haven't hung it yet, I have to put some hangers on it and then find a good spot for it.

Thanks! It was a test on some scrap wood. I wouldn't sell one with carves on the back but it'll be fine for me, lol

Thank you! It's a start, I am very green to all of this but I'll get there slowly. I finally carved out my friends garage sign. I just need to paint it now, that'll be fun (not).

Thank You Bob! Very nice of you to say. I'd say it's mutual, he's a very nice fellow and hard not to like him. He's always been super honest and fair with me, I try to send work his way, especially now that he left Goodyear. I hope he likes it, I plan on giving it to him the next time I go get my oil changed :)

I thought I had posted the "Brad" sign already but maybe it got nuked during the crash. He sent me a picture yesterday of it hung up, he loves it!
