Title: Blaze Kamado.
Post by: 70monte on June 22, 2017, 07:14:00 PM
I finally go to see one of these in the flesh yesterday.  A local BBQ store got one in.  This thing is built like a tank and even the grates are heavy as can be.  It is pretty pricey but should last forever.  Does anyone here have one or cooked on one?

Haven't cooked on one but have cooked a lot on kamado Joe's.  I myself didn't like ceramics.  Heavy, fragile and it takes a bit of skill.  How come you don't get a weber summit?

I might get a Summit some day but I don't need any other cookers at the moment and I guess I have a problem paying that kind of money for a Weber even though they make great products and most of the grills/smokers I own are Webers.  I wasn't planning on buying the Blaze but it looks to be a nice cooker.

You got a lot of great grills and smokers.  You need a drum smoker.  Or is that me.

I agree with Sparky, if I were going to be spending that kind of money on a Kamado style cooker, I'd go Weber.

Two grand for the Summit (24") on a cart (https://www.amazon.com/Weber-WEBER-Summit-Charcoal-Gril/dp/B01JN0YYKO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498252318&sr=8-1&keywords=weber+summit+charcoal) vs. almost 5 bills more for the Blaze (20") with some wheels and wings (https://www.247grills.com/blaze-20-inch-freestanding-cast-aluminum-kamado-grill-with-shelves/?gclid=CjwKEAjw-LLKBRCdhqmwtYmX93kSJAAORDM6mMvTq0AIe5rOdL9k74SEUv5gUue0aWmlfSJA5kGJmxoCKuPw_wcB).

I'm not knocking their product (I've never even seen one) just stating my preference.

A Kamado is a kamado.
They all cook the same.
My cheap POS AKORN that cost $300 is 5 years old going strong & with a tip-top temperature control holds temperatures rock steady.
Not everyone likes cooking on a kamado.
I'd consider getting a AKORN as a starter & if you fall in love get the summit

Wayne, I know you're not in the market for a Blaze.

I've never seen one, but since you mentioned it, I'm gonna do some lookin' myself.  Thanks for the tip.

I've looked at Kamado's in the past and even thought about getting an Akorn but just never pulled the trigger.  I was just intrigued by the Blaze Kamado when I first heard about it and was glad to finally see one in person.  I agree that it is very pricey and it only has a 20" grate so I don't know if I would consider it a good value other than everything on it will probably last forever.

I think with everything I currently own, I have all of my bases covered for what I want to cook and how I want to cook.  I have no real interest in pellet grills or stick burners and a Kamado is not really on my radar even though I would like to try cooking on one.

My problem as you can probably tell is that I like to try out different cookers and tend to buy things I don't need just so I can see if I like it.  If I ever see a used Weber summit for a decent price, I may break weak and buy it just because of all of the positive reviews I've seen.

Anyway, the store owner is going to use the one he has at his store as a demo so I will get his thoughts on how he likes it.  He owns and cooks on a Big Joe so he is curious on how the Blaze will compare.

I finally got to talk to the store owner today about how he liked cooking on the Blaze.  He said he was very impressed with how well it held temps, how well it dials in temps, and how little lump it takes to use it.  He also said that he might like it a little more than his KJ which is saying a lot.

I was there taking a chicken class and the teacher used three different cookers during the class.  He used a KJ, a Weber Summit, and a Gateway Drum.  It was neat seeing all of them in action.  The owners of the store were also cooking a couple of tri-tips on the Blaze Kamado.

It was a fun day and I learned some things in the process.
