To the photo nerds I have a question. Was at a dinner party and met someone in the magazine buis. The conversation turned to pictures and then food pics. I said I did a little amateur food photography and he asked me to send him some samples. The question is if I uploaded a group of pics would anyone be interested in giving me some honest opinions of which pics make the cut? I could number them and just give me the ones you would cut. Just asking.

I would put a watermark signature on them unless you don't care he will profit off your pictures. I would look at your pictures if you want :)
-
I don't know cr@p about pictures but love looking at your seafood pics or any of your pics. As long has its food.

I'm always happy to look a good food pics. I'll also give you my opinion fwiw. I do agree with Keymaster - put a watermark -or if you are using Photoshop you can create a copyright in the properties that the client can't remove to prove ownership.

I do a lot of food photos for various publications/ blogs and a lot of them get posted on other sites without my permission or royalty payment... watermark them before posting.
Just my opinion

Ok these are what I feel are half way decent. I think there are 41. Thinking need to trim down to 25. So pick your least favorites to delete. Just list your numbers to delete in a reply and I will tally. Pick as many or as few as you wish to delete. Get brutal guys! Thanks for your help.

Well my mouth is watering, so I would say these are some fantastic pics. If you are not doing this for a living, you should be.

Art, TP I am looking for negative feedback! Give me 10 you would not submit for publication. List by number please. Thanks!

4, 7, 9, 19, 22, 26, 28, 35, 37, 41 would be my least favorites. 9 is my least favorite. It is a good photo, but there is no sign of lamb or any way to understand that it is anything other than a normal taco. They are all nicely composed (a few of my least favorites are because of stuff falling off of the edges of the pic in a bad way). I have nothing bad to say about the color, focal points or depth of any of the photos. All in all, great job.

Rick --
Overall some very nice photos. I would exclude 4/ 9/ 11/ 12/ 14/ 16/ 17/ 18/ 22/ 25 and 38.
Composition is good in most of the pictures but you need to look at what's in the background. Plating could be neater. You need to make the protein the main subject, not the side dishes. You eyes should be drawn to the main subject.
The way I usually plate is carb at 11 o'clock, veg at 2 and protein at 6. The carb and protein should each cover 1/4 of the plate while the veg covers half of the plate.
Go easy on the garnish... rimming the plate is passé... it's a throw back to the 90's!
I'm not an expert on food styling but was an editor for more than 20 years (back when we did photography with film and a dark room instead of a computer <lol>). I hope this helps.
Some of the photos would be better if cropped to eliminate the background and some others need to be color balanced.

1, 4, 9, 14, 22, 26, 27, 30,
I agree with the others. More focus on what is the major component of the plate.
All in all Rick great looking photos and I always enjoy reading your posts.

I found the food photographs appetizing.
However a design/magazine editor would probably find them a little too much "in your face".
That is, the camera needs to be further away from the subject matter and the photos need to display more of a "table setting".
Your depth of field is a little shallow in a few of the photographs. Baking.away, again, will improve this.
Again, these are obviously not done in a commercial photo studio. Your use of lighting is very good considering this. Setting up light tent in family eating area is not an easy project.
In taking photographs for menus, we would often be working with a specific designer who would lead with his ideas in the composition of the photograph.
This topic was initiated a few week ago. Have you had the opportunity to submitt any photographs to a agency as yet?
What was their feedback?
