This is not a dig on the dehydrator, it did what it does, produce heat. I wasn’t thinking and placed it on my table which has a glass cover and the heat cracked the glass. I have it taped until I know what I am going to do with it. A few years back I resurfaced the table and chairs and had a glass top made. It has been great until yesterday >:(
Sometimes the stupidity finds me ???

Pretty sure that could happen to all of us, well maybe not Muebe. ???
I would have gotten a serious LOOK from my wife

All my home furnishings are plastic so no worries here Pappy.
Well that sucks RAD....

Thanks PAM. It was white when I bought it and over the years it looked like crap, so I stripped it and stained it. That is why I got the glass, to keep it looking nice.
-
That is too pretty of table to have painted. We have a felt pad on our round oak table, keeps it like new but then you don't get to see the wood. Don
-
I'm sure getting the glass cut to fit the table cost a pretty penny. I am wondering if the glass was tempered or even if that would have helped in this instance?
-
I'm glad I'm not in your shoes ??? ??? ??? ???
-
melt some lead along the cracks and call it a stained glass. ::)
-
Gee - I hate that happened to you RAD....
Maybe - you could place some 2''x 2''s under it to create an aigret, and the heat can rise away from any surface it is on that way? So that any surface you set it on in the future can have some protection that way?
-
... create an aigret...
It would never occur to me to set anything on a plume of feathers (but then again, I don't have the benefit of a Texas A&M education). What did you really mean?
-
Ouch!!!! That can make for an expensive batch of jerky or dehydrated fruit....
-
OH NO!!!! Hopefully you can get the glass replaced for less than an arm and a leg! Tempered glass might be the way to go if you can find a place to do it for you. Although GusRobin's stained glass idea isn't too shabby! :)
If it makes you feel any better, you're not the first person to make that boo-boo! My ex-MIL did that when she was canning-- set down a bunch of hot jars on their BRAND NEW solid granite counter top (with only a towel underneath)... sounded like a gun went off when they cracked!
-
No solid decisions yet but when I stained the table I put on a couple coats of polyurethane and it should be ok without the glass. Thoughts are to put a tablecloth on during everyday use and uncover the table for family dinners.
Now that the kids are adults (by age only) we seldom use the table for dinners except for holidays and birthdays anymore.

Thanks for the post RAD. We have glass on our kitchen table also. It's always better to learn from someone else's problems. Sorry, but true. Thanks again.

:D :D :D
The price of typing on a phone - with "autospell"... ::) "air-gap" was the intended word. And you are right - somehow both A&M and you benefitted by your absence there. :D
Some further thinking..... I think I know why this glass broke in the manner it did.
The edged being cut and polished in the "sculpted" manner of the top design created un-even stress points around the edge of the glass. The heat source was likely not centered - nor could the heat generated be evenly distributed throughout the glass . This caused un-even temperatures, and - un-even expansion of the glass in it's circumference. (albeit on a microscopic level - the expansion/contraction of glass is calculable). The un-even stress from the heat caused the glass to break.

This is one of the main reasons I posted this. Stupid on my part but I've learned so much from other posted mistakes and wanted to share mine to help other members not make my mistake.
Good cooks or bad cooks, post them all. We all learn

When Tee and the turtle start going at it, I find it better to just act like I know what is going on. ???

All in fun....just a twisted sense of humor working out the kinks. ;D

Odd man out! I kinda like the pattern the crack made in the glass, enchanced by the duct tape! I know, weird, but I like it.

Sorry but this just gave me a belly laugh!
Sorry about the glass, but it is a beautiful table!
