Title: CLARIFICATION FOR THE TERM "AIR FRYER"

We need to separate the air fryers by description.....

Those that you use oil with ( How the hell they market THAT as an..."air fryer" escapes all sense for me... ::) ;D)

And those that are TRUE air fryers.

So- how would you guys like to do this?  Suggestions? Ideas?

Here is one:
OAAF - ( Oil Added Air Fryer )
NOAAF ( No Oil Added Air Fryer )

Or even OA or NO as an abbreviation that helps the reader know more about how accurate the description "Air Fryer" is ( even tho any of them are truly a convection oven...not really a fryer anyway :D ).

It will help folks know enough o decide which way they want to go - for health/dietary reasons....

Yeah, I mean you can oil your food if you want to or are there specific models of air fryers that need oil??

From all the research I did before purchasing my first air fryer (I have three different airfryers), they all suggest misting certain foods with oil before cooking.
I think the confusion starts with the statement "a tablespoon or less".
Most foods don't need any oil at all, while some need a Little misting. (frozen breaded mushrooms come to mind)
I may be wrong, but from what I have found, they all say they use "little or no oil" but all the manuals pretty much read the same in regards to adding a little oil to certain foods.

Totally agree! If I want to crisp something up, like chicken for example, I will mist top and when I flip mist the other side. I don't think there is a need to try and distinguish between which ones use oil or which ones don't. I think it is the manufacturer's that are confusing the issue. The majority of us here that own air fryers know to add or not add oil.

Which "air fryers" do you use oil in?

The first one I bought was a T-FAL. It has a paddle that rotates, and it is sloped slightly toward the front. But, I was frustrated that it required oils for many of the things I wanted to cook in it. So I gave it away.

Then I bought the Power Fryer XL.  Works great. NO OIL NEEDED. This is important to me - and it may be important ( or not to others, perhaps dependent on health concerns. But at least it is a more true example of an air fryer rather than a fryer that uses a little air and a lot of hot air.)

The majority of us here that own air fryers know to add or not add oil.

True...But - what "we" know is one thing. What "we" publish that is read by tens of thousand of non-members every day ( those are really the kinds of page views we get folks...) on this site - is judged by others based on it's accuracy as well as it's friendly tone.
So - I think it valuable - as the interest grows, and more and more brands/models/types of "air fryers" become available - that we offer some degree of accuracy in the description of what makes one air fryer different from another.
Not trying to be harsh about it...just thought it would be helpful to others that think all products sold as air fryers operate the same way. They don't......Adding oil because I want to is one thing. Having to add oil if I have a dietary restriction...that is a different issue. You would want to know those things too, right?

 :D :D :DNo instructions.... Was just thinking how it is useful to use an easy, perhaps abbreviate term for something you want to convey  - but do not want to waste key-stokes.
That was why I brought up the request for possible "short hand" or monikers - such as NO- (No Oil ) and OA for Oil Added.

There are some air fryers that require oil - some do not. This confuses us as consumers.

And then, there are times we choose to ad a little oil. In a NO air fryer - this is a tiny amount typically, but noteworthy if needed to make the food cook correctly. Worth mentioning... ;)

In a OA fryer - one may need to vary the amount of oil required to cook the recipe being posted - Also worth mentioning, so others can duplicate our results..... :)
No rules about this - no one will be chastised, ostracized or required to exercise if they do not want to do this.;D It was merely an epiphany which culminated in a suggestion- and a desire to help us all communicate the complete idea of the exactly which kind of air fryer, or whether we added oil to the cooking.

FWIW - I think there are many recipes for air fryers that recommend oils - when none is really needed. I have tried a few things both ways. There are some foods that I think you have to spritz a little - some that really come out no differently either way.

I still haven't seen any good recipes for fried air so I guess it's just as well I didn't buy yet another "tool for the fool."

yea, regardless of the fryer, seems what you're "frying" seems to determine whether to add oil or no oil.

That is the potentially confusing part. Some air fryers require oil, some suggest it...some may even suggest that none is needed.

Of course the name itself "air fryer" is a different take on what Char Broil did to market the Big Easy and SRG line of "oil-less turkey fryer".

But if you really investigate how each company makes it's product - some still need oil. A small amount, yes. But...others require none. What's Mother to do? :D :D :D

I don't think anyone interpreted your comments that way Rog. I didn't, at least....We can discuss, and banter ideas about all day long - as long we are being respectful here. And - we do not have to agree on everything. How boring would that be? ;D

We are all playing with a new-ish tool for our cooking. There are no "standards" in the marketing, or naming of products. And, when I began to see some divergence in what is being sold as an air fryer....I just figured it may help us - but as importantly - anyone else searching on line for information about them - if we create something in term of a "code" for explaining quickly - which kind of air fryer.

Some folks are on restrictive diets - either by choice, or as an elective. Others are searching for ways to stay healthy longer and modifying their prep methods and ingredients lists.

And some of us don't want to hear that...( O..K...I often identify in this camp :D :D :D)

Regardless - ALL have valid needs, based on their situation.

The Air Fryer, Sous Vide and Instant Pot are 3 cokes tools that I believe can improve anyones outdoor cooking. Because they act as supporting cast members - to bring a meal to the table faster, or with some healthier options.

OK, it is "Saturday night and the moon is right". We have a full Blood Moon shining. But how can you "fry" something in air? You can bake it or roast it but how can you fry it? I am sorry but I am just an old dumb country boy, frying requires a pan, grease and heat

Ken...I guess it is the same as you can "fry" a turkey in a Char Broil Big Easy or SRG..they are sold as "oil-less turkey fryers". They are actually high heat convection ovens.
But, your point is well taken - and another example of what I was saying in some of my posts in this thread: There is confusion due to marketing language, and no standards for definitions. Some of these units use oil and some do not.

It is a bit of a misnomer.
I think a better name would be "air cooker".

It does give foods a crispness that is hard to get with other cookers (in the short amount of time the "air fryer" takes).

Whatever it is, it puts out some good grub in a short amount of time.  ;)

They are Turtle...*BUT*....there are some that still require you to add oil. So....those are not trueconvection only...

The addition of oil - for some - maybe many - really prevents the rationale for WHY we wanted this tool in the first place. To have another speedy, bad weather or healthier option. Now one questions the "healthier" aspect if you have to add oil.
That is why I called attention to this. We tend to make assumptions of parity among brands based on the marketing language used by the manufacturer....shame that all "marketing language" does not come on a neatly perforated, soft 2 ply roll...... ;) :D

I have always called my Big Easy a roaster. It cooks amazing food, but does not fry. Gotta love marketing guys. I do rub  a bit of oil on my birds that I  put in The Big Easy to make the skin crispy. Whatever you call it, it cooks good food. For the Super Bowl I made some of my world famous (well famous in Alabama) Birmingham Wings. I season the wings with Tony C's but iif I want to keep it absolutely Birmingham I use Pileletri"s seasoning from Mr. P's Butcher Shop and Deli in Birmingham. Quite possibly one of the best in the world. He makes a whole line of spices right in the deli and is a wonderful butcher. He is old school and an artist.
