No solid decisions yet but when I stained the table I put on a couple coats of polyurethane and it should be ok without the glass. Thoughts are to put a tablecloth on during everyday use and uncover the table for family dinners.

Now that the kids are adults (by age only) we seldom use the table for dinners except for holidays and birthdays anymore.

Thanks for the post RAD. We have glass on our kitchen table also. It's always better to learn from someone else's problems. Sorry, but true. Thanks again.

... create an aigret...

It would never occur to me to set anything on a plume of feathers (but then again, I don't have the benefit of a Texas A&M education). What did you really mean?

 :D :D :D
The price of typing on a phone - with "autospell"... ::)  "air-gap" was the intended word. And you are right - somehow both A&M and you benefitted by your absence there. :D
Some further thinking..... I think I know why this glass broke in the manner it did.
The edged being cut and polished in the "sculpted" manner of the top design created un-even stress points around the edge of the glass. The heat source was likely not centered - nor could the heat generated be evenly distributed throughout the glass . This caused un-even temperatures, and - un-even expansion of the glass in it's circumference. (albeit on a microscopic level - the expansion/contraction of glass is calculable). The un-even stress from the heat caused the glass to break.

This is one of the main reasons I posted this. Stupid on my part but I've learned so much from other posted mistakes and wanted to share mine to help other members not make my mistake.

Odd man out!   I kinda like the pattern the crack made in the glass, enchanced by the duct tape!   I know, weird, but I like it.
