First Annual Ohio Buckeye Gathering!► When/Where?The dates for the Buckeye Gathering will be June 5th - 7th, at the
Mohican River Inn, near Loudonville, OH.
This rustic motel sits atop a secluded wooded ridgeline in the highlands of Ohio. Standard rooms will sleep four people. They're not fancy, but they are reasonable (especially for a resort area) comfortable and clean! My wife and I stayed here for our 20th wedding anniversary and enjoyed it!
They have a pavilion and large private picnic area that will be available for us to use as a gathering spot at NO charge, provided that we are staying at the motel.
The Inn's website has some nice pictures of the rooms and such, so be sure to check it out.
The only real drawback to this location is Cell Phone coverage; Verizon is the only service that works reliably. I believe there may be better coverage if you drive the six miles into town.
► Reservation info: The Inn is currently closed for the season, but their reservation system is now active, so you can
reserve a room right through the website, or you can call them and leave a message (they are very good at returning calls).
● The rate for a standard room (sleeps 4) is $79 - $99 per night (weekend rate - Friday, Saturday - is $99). They said they would offer a discount if staying multiple nights, but you may have to call to get it locked in.
● When you reserve a room,
be sure to mention you'll be attending the "Buckeye Gathering", so they know to group our rooms together.
If using the online reservation system, type "Buckeye Gathering" in the "Other Information / Reason for visit" field.
► EquipementI will bring and have available for use:
● At least two grills; the MAK and the Stoven Weber combo.
● A two burner camp stove
● A couple of folding tables
● An assortment of cast iron pans, a dutch oven or two, baking sheets, cooking utensils, etc.
● A large cooler for extra ice.
● 5 Gallon Water Jug with a spigot
● Wash tubs
Things for you to bring:● Camp chairs for sitting (I will have a few extra just in case)
● A cooler for whatever food you bring.
● Of course you are welcome to bring a grill, and whatever cooking utensils you like.
● Someone may want to bring a coffee maker
► Info about the area:This somewhat mountainous area is absolutely gorgeous, literally (the Clear Fork Gorge runs through this area)! There is an abundance of wildlife in the area including deer, turkey and Bald Eagles!
Just a few site seeing opportunities in the area, for those interested:● Clear Fork Gorge overlook. This is a must see IMHO - We may even organize a breakfast outing there.
● International Wine festival - happening that Saturday at the nearby
Wolf Creek / Pine Run Grist Mill , which was restored just a few years ago.
● The heart of Ohio Amish country is a 30 minute drive away. Ohio (not PA) is home to the largest Amish settlement in the U.S.
● Heini's Cheese Chalet - where you can sample something like 50 kinds of cheese.
● Malabar Farm State Park & Inn - Formerly the farm & home of author Loise Bromfield (this is where Lauren Bacall & Humphrey Bogart were secretly married). The Inn has some extremely good fine dining, and at fairly reasonable prices too!
● Scenic Drives, Fishing & Hiking opportunities.
I will post some pictures as soon as I get them uploaded, and will post driving directions when we get closer to the time.
I hope to see you there!
