Part of my Current Roadtrip - Ogallala, NE
« Reply #-1 on: July 30, 2015, 12:39:40 AM »
My wife and I stopped in Ogallala, NE today for lunch.  We ate at the Crystal Palace Saloon, part of Front Street, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  Lots of old west feel to this place.

On the menu was the following:

MOUNTAIN OYSTERS
Sometimes you feel like a "NUT".
Oysters, fries 'n Texas toast - $13.99

I ordered a Nebraska beef burger.

I will be posting a few of the places we stopped when I get home.  A couple of really good places to stop if you are near there.

I have an Ogallala stainless steel pan to make dinners.  Just layer the food and cook for 45 minutes.  One can dinner is great.  Mine is a 2 gallon can. Pam   .☆´¯`•.¸¸. ི♥ྀ.

Don't knock 'em til you've tried 'em  :o

I'd have been on those mountain oysters like a chicken on a junebug!  Haven't had any since I've lived east of the river.  Need a fix  ;D

Have you ever tried the "lamb fries" at the Stockyards in OKC?  Tee and I shared an order several years ago on our way to NM for an elk hunt.

I have had the Mountain Oysters several time in Montana on mule deer hunts.  On one trip I placed an order for the "oysters" while my son was with me.  He liked them so much that he ordered them each night thereafter for dinner.  They are retry good.

Count me in when it comes to mountain oysters, I love 'em. Back in my younger days I used to go pheasant hunting every opening day with some buddies at their relative's place. Us youngsters were basically drivers for the older non resident hunters, but we got a lot of shooting and always had a blast. We would usually be limited out on roosters by 2 o'clock (hunting starts at noon). Then we cleaned all the birds. When that was all done, the tradition was a "nut fry", beer and Rook. Some of the best times I ever had, or ever will have!

If you hurry, you can catch the last day of the 33rd annual Testy Festy (Testicle Festival) in Clinton, MT. I think I'll just have that hamburger in Oceanport, New Jersey today. That's as close as I want to get to Montana and mountain oysters .

About 100 years ago when I was 9 - 12 I went to YMCA camp every summer. It was about 2 weeks and held near Lake Sakakawea in ND. It was a great time. Each year we had a "project." Once it was to assist in roping, branding, and collecting oysters from calves. The grand finale that evening was a fresh batch of fried oysters. Many refused, but I had to try. They were actually pretty good.
