Title: First SRG Butt
Post by: SiFumar on February 23, 2013, 11:04:35 PM
I got a late start today on trying the SRG butt.  Thanks for the help Tommy!  12 lb butt just coated in mustard, S&P, garlic/onion powder.

At 5hrs.

I somehow misplaced my Thermopen today(I be thinking it was the wine) so I kind of guesstimated the temp....I had taken it earlier and it was 170...so I let it go to 6hrs.  This was left after I took it out to put in the foil.

So it tasted pretty dang good!  It's still in the foil.  Will take another pic when I pull it.

Excellent!  Specially for the dreaded guestimate approach.

Your guesstimation was correct  :D  Those SRG's don't mess around when it comes to pork butts. Don't hurt either with the King of Infrared a pm away ;)

Great job...now about that plate for Sparky........... ;D

Thanks y'all!  So today I found the thermo pen lol......it's purple(fastest color when you can find it :D) (it was sitting on my box of rubber gloves!LOL)  So here's my (sober  :-[) opinion on SRG butts.  Fantastic!  The smoke flavor tho is just not there using the little thingy on the side.  I did not have a "Tommy ring".  I will definitely use the SRG for future butts.  But I will smoke it in the Bradley first and finish it in the SRG.  It is quicker and juicy.  I've had the SRG for over a year and just never had tried butts.  It was my favorite for chicken(now the PBC is) and for grilling at high temps.

I think you've found what most of us have.  Moister but not as smoky.  Quicker though.  Some people do the combo cook that you just mentioned.  Glad you liked your butt.

True you wont get a lot of smoke with an SRG butt.  You can cheat it with a Tommy Ring TM  I will tell you this for the average person it's hard to beat.

People use to say I was nuts for doing pulled pork in an SRG I think now everyone will agree it can be done.  ;)
