Title: 8 butts all with INFRARED brrings me to 86 butts with infrared ;)
Post by: TMB on May 10, 2013, 12:11:29 PM
Well work was slow and I needed to cook some butts for church thought I'd take the dayy off and do all 8 at once.

Since I can only do 2 butts per unit I had to break out my charcoal version of the SRG and put it to good use along side the 2 SRG's and my pellet SRG  ;)

Tommy, pretty cool!

Do you notice any differences in results between the different methods?

If you really love "smoke" in the meat then the charcoal works best, if you just love pulled pork with a good taste of smoke but not overpowering then the SRG's do I great job.  Now if you have lots of time and truley LOVE killer pulled pork then the Pellet SRG is the way to go.

Cooking times for grills...........

SRG's..........  4 to 5 1/2 hrs
Charcoal SRG............  6 to 8 hrs  min
Pellet SRG......... set on med (running 265 inside chamber)  takes 9 +  BUT the taste is Sooooo much better

The SRG's are factory but the charcoal and pellet grills I made from parts. CharBroil does not make a pellet pooper or a charcoal version of the SRG  :'(  So I made them  ;)

Tommy,
how many pounds of charcoal in your charcoal SRG to finish the two butts?
thanx, Jack
You know I didn't even think about checking.  I have an 11 in ring I fill up and it took all it it plus a few sticks of wood.  When I get home I'll fill the ring and see how much it holds

Nice job on the Butts Tommy!! I have a SRG in the truck just waiting to go camping for the weekend at the John Wayne waterfront resort :) I'll see if the wife wants to do a butt this weekend.

4.7 gallons of propane = 430, 270 total BTUs

I believe the SRG on high is around 18,000 BTU an hour.

That is about 24 hours of gas on one tank.

Now Tommy how much you paying for a filled tank?

Take that dollar amount and divide it by 24 to get your hourly cost.

Then times that dollar amount by the hours of the cook time for the butt.

Now you got your cost per cook.

the reason I point it out is
I'm betting it's cheaper to cook the butts with charcoal than it is with propane
but I doubt it's cheaper than a pellet ??
depending on the cost of the pellets + electricity
and the cost of the charcoal

I bet it costs more to do the butts in a BEESR = power
than any other method

btu per pound
With the amount of time money & effort we put into our cookers , meat & prep fuel cost is just a drop in the bucket ::)

Okay, it's still "wrong" but I'm almost ready to try some IR pulled pork.  I'm not ready to make it myself but if you let me know when you get over 100 (just to make sure you have it down right), I'll try to find out where Alabama is, get the necessary shots and visa, and come have some at your house.  Thanks for letting me invite myself.

Turtle, Come to the Gathering and Tommy will do one there.

Tommy, What is your loss percentage on the butt and how many people do you serve per pound?

I really don't know how much loss I would figure 15 % but guessing.

I figure 4 oz per sandwich, 2 per person.  If plate lunch then a straight 8 oz per head plus sides

Looks really good. How easy did each pull compared to how they were cooked?

Just a word of advice for your visit and you guys should be ok:

Remember, turtles are cute (not always), but contaminated.
Handle all turtles and surfaces that have come in contact with turtles as if they are contaminated with Salmonella, because there is a good possibility that they are

Separate the turtle from possible contact with food:
•Do not allow turtles to roam freely about a home or living area, and especially do not allow them in food preparation areas.
•Kitchen sinks should not be used to bathe turtles or to wash their dishes, cages, or aquariums.

I pay 14.50 to have a 20 lb cyl filled

I cook mostly on low with my SRG's so you can add a lot more time with a 20 lb tank

As for $$$$ per cook ?  I don't really think about it cause I love my cookers and they are fun to cook on.  I gave up drinking years ago :) , gave up my bike :( so this is my stress release so $$$$$ does not mean that much to me

So that is approx 0.60 cents an hour to run when on high. And you are running on low part of the cook so that might be over half that when running on low. That seems pretty cheap to me.

You can score a 20lb bag of charcoal for under $10 when you buy two bags. So when you figure out how much your charcoal ring holds we can figure out the cost per hour for charcoal and make Capt Jack happy ;)

Just remember a 20lb propane tank can only be filled legally to 80% or 16lbs. Each pound of propane has 22,000 btu of heat output. So a legally filled propane tank will deliver 352,000 btus of heat output.
