Title: Lost my best friend this morning
Post by: bbqchef on September 25, 2013, 05:17:38 PM
My best friend and companion left us this morning...

Abigail Rose, an 11-year-old chow mix rescue puppy, passed in her sleep with my bride at her side.

She was the kindest and gentlest dog in the world and she will be sorely missed.

May she rest in peace. There will be always be a hole in our heart.

I am very sorry for your loss. I still have a hole in my heart after 25 years for my Red Setter, Damian. I know the cliché is that a dog is man's best friend - but it is true. My thoughts are with you and your wife.

I am very sorry to hear that.  Them rascals sure have a way of integrating themselves into our families, and hearts don't they? I know our little Jack Russel sure has.

My thoughts & prayers are with you!

I was cooking tonight and had scraps to put in her bowl for treats.. then I realized there weren't any bowls by the refrigerator.

Chef, so very sorry to hear of you and your family's loss. You have my condolences. We lost our Gizmo in June, and I know it's not an easy transition to life without your best friend. They are always there.....and when they are not, it's gut-wretching at first. But in time the pain eases, the thoughts are of the very best of times, and a smile or laughter is shared amongst yourselves. Just like our human family and friends when they pass, we mourn them, but we are proud that our lost friend was a part of our lives. It's been about 3 1/2 mos. and I wouldn't have thought I would be ready for another dog for at least a year, but I think I'm ready to have a new friend. My wife was Gizmo's mother (because of the sad circumstances of how he came into the world) and her thoughts were early on that she may not ever be ready. She told me last week, that she is ready. So we are in the market for a new friend.  Life goes on, and we gotta go on as well. Again sir, we are sorry for your loss and hope that one day your hearts will open up again.

My condolences for your loss. I have had a pet bird die in my hands and the sadness of that moment has stayed with me ever since.

I'm sorry, Mike.

I have lost a couple of dogs, though it has been a number of years ago. Both of them helped me through some difficult times of my life.

Truly sorry to read of your loss - I know the feeling of getting into the habit of doing something for a loved one, and then realizing with a sinking heart that they are no longer with us.

We've had many dogs during out lives, and one of our most memorable was a chow - best dog we've ever seen.  It is too bad that a dog's lifespan is so much shorter than a human.

Sorry to hear of your dog's passing.  Getting a dog is like getting married.  It teaches you to be less self-centered, to accept sudden, surprising outbursts of affection and to not be upset by a few scratches on your car.

It's hard to be without them.

Day two...

It's just so strange not having her home with me as I work in my office. She was loyal, friendly and very loving.

Abigail Rose will be sorely missed by my bride and me. After having her as a friend for 11 years it's very, very weird without her.

She was a rescue puppy originally from an abandoned litter in Puerto Rico and then brought to Virginia... Later taken to Massachusetts.

We got her from the Sterling (MA) shelter in 2002. It was the best $300 I ever spent.

She had two bad knees (surgically repaired when she was a puppy) and weak hips but was the best friend one would ever want... friendly, extremely gentle and played well with her cousins (my daughter's two dogs).

As my bride said yesterday... "It was her time. It was her decision." She died in her arms in the family room.

But it wasn't my time.

Chef I know and understand what you are going thru.  July 4th I lost my best friend.  My Caviler King Charles died in my arms.  One will always have a hole in the heart for the loss of our pets.  I recently rescued and 3 month old Schnauzer and she has mended my heart. No pet can replace the pet we have lost.  They just allow us to grow a bigger heart.

This may be stupid, crazy or delusional but I was trying to catch a nap on the couch and I opened my eyes and saw a vision of Abby at the end of the couch watching over me as she always did.

Tells me she's still with us... protecting us in spirit at least.

May she R.I.P.

Of course she is. And she will always be in your heart. After 25 years Damian is still with me.

You are definitely are not crazy. Those delusional visions are way normal. I have those almost every time I lose one of my best friends myself. I tell myself it is just a way to visit with them again so they can tell me that they are really OK.

I have lost two in the last 18 months. It never gets easier. Benson, my avatar, passed away about a year ago. I rescued Dusty last Fall, but unfortunately he went to Rainbow Bridge in June.

Dusty

We were lucky to have Dusty become a part of our lives last September. After a stint with his foster family, we adopted Dusty for his happy face and loving nature. He was such a big lovable lug that fit into our pack so easily. We were hoping to have him for a while to make his retirement years his best ever.

Sadly we found a tumor behind his shoulder blades within his first month with us. It took a couple of blood transfusions and emergency surgery late on a Saturday night, but he survived that in October. He started chemotherapy in January, and had just finished his 6th treatment. This sweet boy never complained about all the scary trips to the vet or the hours enduring chemotherapy. He went through all this very well and remained very active. He even swam and frolicked at the dog beach up to the end.

Dusty went to Rainbow Bridge on June 28, 2013. He had an incredible heart and made everyone who met him smile.

Dusty, you will forever be in our hearts. We had you in our lives way too short of a time.

Mike and Janice

Mike and Janice, so sorry for your loss of Dusty. You are right....it never gets easier. The bond of love is what makes it difficult when we lose them, but that same thing is what makes them special. Everything has a purpose.

Some folks hurt so much they never want to go through that again. As you can see, I am a sucker for an old white face Golden.

For me, they make my life so much better with them in my life, that I will put up with the hurt when they go. Still, it takes months and months to recover. I know bbqchef is hurting.

I can't describe how I feel... I lost my younger sister a couple of months ago and it didn't hurt as much as losing Abby

Chef I completely understand and felt/ feel the same in a guilty sort of way. But it is what it is. What held us together when Gizmo died was the fact we rescued him from a shelter and always treated him as a member of our family. When illness came, we did the best as was possible for him. He knew and we knew our lives and his were better because of each other. And I'm sure your situation was the same.

I'm sorry I'm late on this but I just got back to my computer.  I know how you feel as I lost my lab, Catfish, about 12  years ago and I still tear up when I think about him.  Being back up at the lake for the Gathering where he and I spent years of fun and buddy time up there that only can happen between man and dog.  I'm tearing up as I write this.  I know  you have a heavy heart and and it's full of memories that can be replaced.  Dee
