Propane tank
« Reply #-1 on: January 31, 2014, 02:39:22 AM »
This is my first experience with propane. How long can I expect a tank to last with my Big Easy SRG? I am going to be putting 20# of pork butt on the grill Saturday and I'm concerned that I will run out midway through the process.

Thanks in advance

By no means am I well versed on the SRG (even though I use one), but the gas consumption appears to be no worse than my gas grill.  I've done 3-4 cooks (including a pork butt) on the same tank and it is still relatively full

I'm confident that others (TMB) that are experts will weigh in.

Don't use the exchange places to fill your tank because they only fill them 3/4 full to save money and you end up turning your new tank for one that is old and has been painted. Find a refill station and use it.

I'm with PAM. I keep a couple of tanks around.

A standard propane tank has approx 433,000 BTUs

A Big Easy SRG uses around 18,000 BTUs an hour on high.

433,000 divided by 18,000 = 24 Hours

I am not sure what it uses on low but expect at least that amount of time on a full tank.

If your worried about running low or out of propane get one of these    http://grillgauge.com/

I have two and both have been dead on.   I have 4 tanks so I keep an eye on them with the Grill Gauge when I start my cooking

In the never ending quest to protect us from ourselves it is now mandated you can only fill a propane tank to 80% capacity so a tank that used to contain 20lb can now be filled only to 16lb.  One pound of propane can put out 22,000 btu of heat so a tank with the full 16lb will have 352,000 btu in it. So it is a matter of looking at the btu output of your burner and dividing it into the amount in the tank. The SRG has low and high settings so I would look at the high setting and go from there.

That said, a properly filled 20lb tank will have 16lb. The propane dealer we use at work for our propane exchange sales fills to 15llb for "safety" reasons. I keep 3 tanks on my deck and I have the propane gauges that Tommy mentioned so I haven't run out of propane yet even with 2 or 3 cookers going.

Costco fills them here for 9.95 a tank can't beat that.   I find your local propane dealer will do you better than the trade in places will.
