Title: Big Bones
Post by: Big Dawg on May 21, 2016, 06:44:28 PM
Well, last weekend they discovered a leak behind my dad's water heater.  My brother was in town to fix it so I did a couple of chuckies along with some garlic mashed potatoes.

During the week they discovered mold and have a the bathroom sealed up until it can be remediated.

With their mobility issues, and my parents down to one bathroom, and it being the one furthest away from the living areas, I thought they really deserved a treat.  I cook for them most weekends and try not to repeat food groups (i.e., beef, pork, chicken) on back to back weekends.  But this is a special case . . . .

Thawed these guys out Thursday night.  Rubbed them down Friday with some of Rod Gray's Most Powerful Stuff.

They went on the Big Kahuna with a combination of cherry and pecan in the Slow n' Sear.  Here we are aboiut 2:00 when I started spritzing with some Apple Juice and Wild Turkey.

I just cut up some potatoes and parboiled them.  I finish them in the oven over at my parents' house.

Packing up now.  I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for the compliments so far.  Now for the rest of the story . . . .

Like I said, my parents were in a bit of a mess due to this mold issue.  I had talked to my mom earlier in the week and lead her to believe that I didn't want to put myself at risk, so I was going to pass this weekend.  In the meantime, I'd texted my sister(due to health issues, she spends a couple days a week over at their house) to let her know I was coming over but not let my parents know.

So, I get over there, just as my dad is getting ready to order some pizzas.  I tell him to forget DiGornio, that I've got his delivery right here!

With roasted potatoes and green beans from my GF's mother's garden down in Pageland, SC.

I will say that the comments ranged from melt in your mouth to filet on a stick.

I may not be doing as well as I like on the circuit, but, I'll take that praise any day.

Mangia ! ! ! !

I will definitely pass those wishes along.

Now all I need to do is get to a contest on a Thursday afternoon so that I have to cook them.

I was thinking the same thing here.  I live too far away and when I was in Ohio, would go to my dads quite often to grill out with him.  Sure wish I had learned more while he was around.  He knew his flavor profiles.  That would come in handy now as I try my hand at this grilling.  He never had a chance to try my smoke attempts.... Cherish the times you have!

Priceless!!

I have pics of my dad cooking chicken over an open pit back in the early 50's.  With 6 kids to feed on a small income, about the only thing I remember him cooking outside was burgers and dogs.
I never got to share my bbq experiences with him... :-[

Like the others have said - hang on to each visit...
