Title: Got my big box today
Post by: muebe on December 04, 2012, 09:12:17 PM
Just got home from work and there she was to greet me ;)

Pulled it into the garage and everything appears as it should be. As others have stated it is packaged very well and no visual damage to the box. May not be able to use it until Saturday. Gonna pick up a couple whole chickens to break her in ;D

I was wondering the same thing. I just hope we don't see Muebe hanging in there with those chickens for the first cook in this thing.  ??? ;D

Congrats on the new cooker, buddy!

Nice Muebe, you're really gonna like the PBC.
We're going to try out the Rib Roast cook like Noah did in his video the following weekend. A "test" run before the holidays.  ;D

Well when she got home I had already moved it into the garage and put it next to other boxes. Confrontation averted for now ;)

Nice! Now all you have to do is bring it out and say, I've had that for a while. I've used it before.

That's what my wife tells me when she's wearing something I've never seen her wear before ;D :) :o

So the way this is going I will be able to say, but Sweetie everyone, on Let's Talk BBQ, has one except for me. :(

It just might work :) :D

Worked for my MAK prototype.   ;)

The trick is to cut the box up real good and get it in the trash and just act like ya had it for years!!

Congrats on your new PBC!!!!!

This is easy-peasy.  You say you won it in a contest.  You tell her you had to write an essay on “Why my wife is the most awesome woman in the world.”

What I would do Muebe is set it right next to your plastic garbage can and put trash in it for a week and let it get dumped once then show wifey how you expertly turned a garbage can into the ultimate smoker- Tah dah, Winning ;)

Wife was going to the store and I asked her to pick up a couple whole chickens and lighter fluid. She gave a strange look and said "Lighter fluid?!?" I said "Yep... Good for starting the pellets in the tube smoker" ;)

You clearly married out of your pay grade. She is on to you, playing possum....waiting to pounce. ;)

Ok so time to open the box up and get the first cook in. As others have stated the PBC is very well packaged.

Came with the hooks, hook grabber, two bottles of PBC rubs, and instructions. Hooks are heavy duty and appear to be well made...

Heavy duty charcoal basket sized for the cooker and holds a small bag of kingsford(included)...

Welded feet of the charcoal basket...

Here is the barrel stand. It is well made but not large enough IMHO. With the barrel on the stand it did not feel steady. The stand should have a wider stance than the barrel so it does not feel like the barrel could be knocked over. I have mine right on the concrete so no big deal...

The lid is lightweight and fits well onto the barrel. Has a horseshoe handle that feels solid, centered, and welded on...

Inside of the barrel. So pretty! Not for long! Barrel is quality made and the powder coating is really nice on the exterior. Looks like it will hold up to high temps...

And the interior grate for stuff you cannot hang. Seems to be solid and has a nice fit to the barrel...

Now for a couple whole chickens...

Spatched and liberally coated with the PBC All Purpose Pit Rub...

Into the firdge for a 20 minute air dry...

Flame on...

Hook em and cook em...

igrill pit probe in place...

After 20 minutes charcoal is ready and in they go...

igrill on watch...

Should be done shortly ;)

Ok so I was getting rady to pull them because the IT was at 160F and then all the sudden the internal temp started shooting up and alarms on the igrill went off! I run out there and find that both chickens had fallen from their hooks. The meat was so tender where I hooked them they gave way. I quickly retrieved them from the bed of coals :o Although somewhat charred they appear to still be good ;)

Here is the graph of the cook...

I debated leaving the grill in just in case of this happening but decided not to. I suppose I should have hooked them further down into the chicken where it is stronger. This is more of a operator error on my part and overconfidence in the hooks supporting the bird at that point.

PBC seems to hold temps right around 307F once the coals are fully lit. Now it is time to give the chicken a taste ;)

I like the technology you're using with the PBC. That iGrill looks pretty neat. I hope the yard bird came out good!

Was it tasty? Yes it was!

There is something special about charcoal. I guarantee that anyone you serve this chicken to would be able to identify that is was cooked with charcoal. In fact they may even be able to say it was with Kingsford!

Eating this chicken took me back to a time when my father would fire up the old weber and grill away. I was impressed with the amount of charcoal flavor the chicken had. IMHO there is no need to add any smoke flavor. The charcoal does the job.

The PBC is truly a set it and forget it charcoal cooker... Except when you improperly hook the meat ;)

Lol! My last cook, I hung a link of homemade sausage. I hung them on the hook where the natural casing is twisted. You can imagine what happened in a few minutes. Luckily I had just stepped back out to do something and I decided to open the lid to catch a wiff and a peak ;D. They were nicely done. All I was trying to do was heat them thru.

Muebe- Looks great but I would definitely recommend cutting the chickens in half like on our videos, that way you won't have the problems with hook placement. When they are cut in half you hook them under the wing and it holds really tight.

Yeah was not the best place that I chose. I think if I would have used two hooks in each one under the wings I would have been fine. The dang chickens got too tender and gave way! It is all your fault! :D

Even though they spent a short time on the coals they were still really good ;)

Crispy skin Muebe?? ;D

The skin was very good but not super crispy except for the skin that made contact with the coals. But it was not chewy either.
