Title: Deer going in the pellet pooper in the A.M.
Post by: TMB on February 22, 2014, 01:52:10 AM
A friend of mine gave me this nice deer roast to cook for them.  I'm going to put it in the pellet SRG in the morning then finish it off with an SRG on high for crisp skin

Just a basic brine of salt, sugar, black pepper and onion powder then cheap bourbon to finish!  ;)

it will soak all night tonight then I'll wash it off add some rub then into the pellet pooper

From the title I thought you were collecting deer poop (pellets) for some new green cooker you invented ::)

I was wondering how you got a deer to poop in your pellet hopper.   ::)

Word of caution:  Almost any wild game will dry out quickly while cooking.  Keep you marinade/basting sauce handy throughout.  You may want to take the marinade and reduce it to make a finishing sauce.  Good luck.  Sounds interesting.

Well got the pellet pooper going and set the deer in for a two hr low and slow then finish in the SRG.  But as luck would have it something went wrong with the pellet pooper   >:( >:( >:( >:(

Seems the temp would not go above 250 even on high and no smoke, guess I lost or losing my motor for the auger or the control unit is going south.  Will worry about it later, so I had to switch plans and go SRG for the rest of the cook  :D

Love having enough grills where I have a back up grill for the back grill when the first grill goes down  8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

So here is the roast.  I used olive oil and Tatonka Dust wrapped in in plastic rap for a few hrs then into the pellet pooper but that went bad so into the SRG!   ;D   Cooked till IT  of 170 and nice bark.   Sent it over to my buddies house along with a yard bird he killed wrung it's neck got it ready for me to cook  ;)

The deer was juicy and lord it was good. 48 hrs of soaking in brine and then adding bourbon to it really helps

Thanks, if the pellet pooper had not gone down it would have been much better I bet.

Thanks for the help, will be looking at the motor and controller when I get in from work Monday. So I hope to have it going by next weekend

Having a backup plan is always good.  Having all the necessary "toys" to chose from is even better.  Nice recovery.

Bourbon can go a long ways to solving a lot of problems.  Sometimes it even starts the problems.

Bourbon makes everything better, Tommy I'd say you have backups for your backups and even they have a backup!

Great to hear you like the flavor of the seasoning on the venison roast!
Did you get the pellet grill figured out?
