Hog farmer in MN - and future BBQ/Smoker home cook
« Reply #-1 on: July 24, 2014, 11:45:08 PM »
After trolling this forum for a few weeks, decided to jump right in by registering. My family runs a hog farm, and we've been
getting more and more requests for custom growing, and custom pork cuts for folks who smoke meat.
We're interested to learn more and maybe do a little smoking ourselves. Presently, we own a Ducane gas grill and a Weber charcoal grill (both 16 years old). We're considering to buy a "good" smoker so that we can learn on the job, so to speak, about this method of cooking and showcasing our pork. I expect that I'll mostly watch and learn for a while. Hopefully that is ok. It's nice to meet you all.

Welcome from Lower Alabama!  This forum has a wide range of knowledge. So I think and hope you will find the help your looking for.  Make some friends and have fun doing so!
  Ask questions anytime.
My brother in law had one of those old Ducanes until last year. I cooked on it several times and the one thing I noticed was it was very steady with the temp. I think parts are showing back up on the market for it. I believe they sold the design and another company is making them again.(assuming it's the same model)
If you can get away come down to Georgia at the end of September  to our fall gathering. There will be some good folks there you can learn a lot from.

WELCOME!

Perhaps a follow up post in the General Discussion Section - with as much information about how your want to be able to cook ( grill? smoke? ) - and how much you want to cook at one time, etc...will help you get some real input, and ideas about the variety of equipment that is available - and recommendations.

I look forward to you educating us about hog farming. We all forget what it take to get the food to our table, in terms of the time and work involved.

Welcome from the alien capital of the universe!   Envy you with all of that fresh pork!   Getting more difficult all the time to find real good stuff around here.     There are a lot of good smokers out there on the market.  IF I didn't care about my marriage, I'd get a Masterbuilt rig--the larger of the two.   BUT, I know I'd lose my happy home if I bought another piece of equipment right now!   You might check Jeff Phillips site--smoking-meat.com, or the "StoryQue" magazine, which I subscribe to on line.   Jeff has revewed quite a few smokers and so do various people in StoryQue.
