Zebra Finches - Fourth Generation
« Reply #-1 on: March 09, 2013, 11:20:07 PM »
I thought some of you might enjoy this.

We've raised zebra finches for several years now and we were down to the last finch of our third generation, so we thought we'd get him a little mate for Christmas.

A little over two weeks ago they started laying their first brood. They lay one egg per day, this brood totaled four eggs in all. Then they start sitting on them to incubate.

Early this morning the first egg hatched. It was difficult getting a picture, but you can see the chick (looks like a little pink alien) laying in between the other three eggs.

Here's the proud poppa. He's a third generation finch; we had his grandparents.

And here's Momma hen keeping her new baby and the other eggs warm. They take turns sitting.

I'll post more pics as they develop. :)

Cool, we had finches onetime and the baby was born with a scissor beak and could not eat well. The vet wanted it , so we gave it to him :) end of story ;)

Very cool.  Always wanted a bird for a pet.   Instead my kids like reptiles.  have a ball python little over 3 feet long and a couple lizards.  Had some frogs for a while but let them go.

I used to breed Cockatiels but I kept more than I sold. When you hand feed em you become quite attached.

Zebra finches are beautiful birds, please keep us posted of how the yung-uns grow up. Do you hand feed em to get them tame or do you let the parents take em to hulling seed?

I presently own:

-1- keet

-1- white dove

Here is a recipe http://www.ifood.tv/recipe/ortolans-on-croutons

(Notice there is no cleaning the inside of the bird.... :-X )
