tc, very ingenious. I would have never given that a thought, but it looked like it worked great so I am inclined to follow the leader and try this.

Now that was one heck of a sear. I can see that your gas grill will be your go to steak cooker.

I like the all over sear that Tom got with the grate he used. The grill grates give nice thin sear marks, thin being the key word. They also block off the direct heat that Tom got that gave that all-over sear you see on those steaks. The direct heat still seared the steaks where they weren't in contact with the grate.
