Title: RIP Col Harry H Moreland
Post by: tlg4942 on May 09, 2018, 01:03:12 PM
Yesterday we attended the funeral for my former father in law.
He was a terrific guy who helped teach my children the importance of responsibility, dependability and credibility.
He is one of 3 men who brought the Honor Guard flights to the Alabama gulf coast along with a long list of other selfless accomplishments during his retirement.   He helped many people who never knew who it was that helped.
Harry was without a doubt one of the most honorable men I have ever known.
Here is a very short review of his military service:
Colonel Harry H. Moreland received many awards, commendations and an Honorable Discharge.
He began his military career at the age of 18 in February 1942 in the Army Air Corps. Graduated from Maxwell Air Force Base from flying school in 1943 then off to Perry, Florida to train in the P47. His first assignment in World War II was with the 27th Fighter Bomber Group flying out of Anzio, Italy. He was in World War II, Korean War (1950) and Vietnam War (1967). He flew over 45 different types of aircrafts from the PT-17 to the F-4 jet. He flew 150 missions in WWII, and was shot down twice; 127 in Korea and shot down twice; 85 in Vietnam. He retired with an honorable discharge in July 1972.
Some of the local vets managed to pull off a P 47 fly over at the funeral which was a very powerful moment.
This week was his last flight west kicking in the afterburners while pulling straight up into the heavens.
  You will be missed Harry.
P.S. Harry made the best prime rib ! Luckily he taught my son to do as well!

Wonderful tribute to a fine man and great American. Just buried my Dad this week, Hen was a WW-II Navy vet, he was a gunners mate on the USS Nevada in every campaign in the Pacific. Survived a direct hit on his gun turret from a Kamijkaze plane. He would have been 99 years on June 3.

Sorry to hear about your dad passing Ken.  That age group was a tough bunch!

Sorry for you loss Ken. We will never again know a generation like the men of WW II.

Had they not been hardened for the rigors of war by first surviving the Great Depression, and surviving such incredibly grueling times......I fear we would all be speaking German or Japanese today. They were the truly tough men and women that our younger generations should be far better educated about in order to correctly understand sacrifice.

Really sorry for you and your familys loss Terry of this real American hero. I'll bet that you will never forget some of the stories this fine gentleman has told you over the years of some of his military experiences. Been fortunate enough to know a couple of these older heroes and could sit and listen to them for hours at a time. So sorry for you...
