Title: Dented Rec Tec 340
Post by: slothritis on July 03, 2020, 08:14:28 AM
I finally received my 340 yesterday. I was so excited. Turns out I have a dent on the barrel. Anyone know how to fix it.? I called them they offered to send a new one, but I have to send it back. But it’s difficult for me to do that because I have a physical disability. So they told me to do a temperature test to see if it holds its temp, it does.  I talked to Ray, the owner of rectec, he said it is easily fixable with a rubber mallet. So can anyone give me advice on to maybe remove the dent? Is it fixable? I will post pictures. Thanks.

WOW, sorry you go one like that.    It looks like it will pop out somewhat but not all the way , there is a crease in the middle that I doubt will move much.

A rubber mallet will take most out though, you will just need to give it a solid lick without being to hard (I know hard to judge) but I think you can get most out.

Good luck, if it won't I would take them up on a new one and see if you can find someone to help you with it

I think I would call rectec and have them send you a new hood. It shouldn't be too hard to R&R with a new one. Either the shipping company or rectec at least owes you that, and your grill would be whole again.

I am the least handy person on this earth. If it’s not easy to do, I will not do it. Plus I have a severe physical disability. Just putting on the lid was painful for me.

Although it is difficult, I agree with sending it back.

That said, my next suggestion might be to call a paintless dent repair shop, and see what they have to say/get a quote.

They typically are not to expensive. I recently used one while refurbishing a motorcycle tank, and it is quite impressive as to what a good one can do. Possibly they would make a house call. Just a thought....

AT the price of the grill, I would ask for another one.

That dent is completely unacceptable at the price paid

just sayin

I would explain the disability and ask if they would pay to have it picked up. Or at least ask for a rebate of cash or credit

If they offered something like that, they would have said something when I told them I was disabled and couldn’t put it back in the box and take it to the ups store. They gave me cash back

Not that I am defending Rec Tec, but there have been numerous accounts of grills being damaged in shipping. I have visited their facility and warehouse and they have dedicated personnel. Customer service is beyond reproach. They offered to replace it for you and gave you cash back when you said you would fix it or try to fix it. Checkout the Rec Tec forum or the Rec Tec owners group on Facebook and you will understand what I am saying. I own 2 of their smokers and have had absolutely no problems at all with them. Of course I didn't get mine shipped I am close enough to their headquarters and drove up there and picked them up.

Mike - good post. I think the impact of how freight is being (mis)handled by the carriers nowadays is not just a Rec-Tec issue. We have medical equipment arrive that the boxes look perfect....and the contents are virtually destroyed. It takes real talent to do that, I am sure. But it is not the manufacturer's fault.

Slo - Call up Rec-Tec nd explain your complete situation. Make sure they understand your health issues affecting your ability to re-pack and haul it. My gut says they will arrange for the freight company to send out an OS&D person ( Overage, Shortage and Damage ) to appraise the situation, and then follow that up with a driver in a bobtail w/lift gate to ship it back to Rec Tec. But make sure you dont wait on the call to Rec Tec or the freight company.
And - please keep us informed about this. Will be interested to know how this gets handles for you.

I explained everything. They wanted me to test the grill to see if it holds it’s temperature. It does. They gave me a discount on the grill. Ray suggested I fix it with a rubber mallet. I got most of the dent out and the lid closes all the way now. It’s fine.
