New toy to work with
« Reply #-1 on: October 25, 2014, 09:15:25 PM »
Kimmie's Mom got one of these for us to use on the farm to pick up pecans.  This thing is a 10 when it comes to easy pick up of pecans

If you have pecan trees you need one of these instead of the old pecan picker.  See them side by side, no way will I go back to the old style

OH, we picked up this in less than 8 mins (3rd picture)

The Durham Police Range has one that they use to pick up brass.  A friend of my son's donated it to the range.  Really handy tool that saves the back.

Picking 'em up is just the start of the problem.  Now, you've got to shell 'em  ::)

If they are the "papershell" variety or a hybrid you'll just get sore fingers.  If they are native pecans you'll need several sticks of TNT  ;D

When I was a kid growing up in Oklahoma we'd get pretty good at cracking native pecans with a controlled slam of a a small sledge then pry out the meat with a screwdriver and a dental hygienist's "explorer".  Every time I see a package of shelled pecans in the grocery store I think about all the hard work somebody had to go to to get those pretty, clean halves in that package.  T'aint easy!

No problem, we send them down the road to a market that shells them for us.  Not to $$$$ to have them done

Those are super "picker uppers," agreed.    MUCH faster than the older, stiffer, smaller wire one we had.   AND, in this country, because SO many people have pecan trees, we have places that shell them for a fee.   Well worth the money, IMHO.     Take em in, and, depending on the size of the crop around her, a few weeks later you have some nice pecans--the sort them into halves, pieces and them what's left, which is equivalent to chopped.     Pecan pie around here is a Thanksgiving tradition--probably as many pecan pies and pumpkin.    Of course, no calories and no carbs!    Don't we wish!
